Journalism Classes Launch Routes Webzine

Routes - Gerald McCoy

The Spring semester has been a busy one for journalism students. The Routes online magazine launched in March as a collaborative effort of nearly a dozen journalism classes including multimedia newsgathering, feature writing and content management.

Routes differs from OUDaily.com in the depth and breadth of stories presented. The students pride themselves on capturing intimate profiles and engaging stories through a broad spectrum of mediums. Stories need not have a direct connection to OU, in fact, the desired readers are the citizens of the State of Oklahoma.

Every issue of Routes presents storytelling, news and commentary on the state through video, audio and print formats, allowing the students to vividly showcase their talents.

Current stories include:

Lindsey+Asp Agency Students Stage
Flash Mob to Promote Healthy Sooners

Students working in the new Lindsey + Asp Advertising and Public Relations Agency provide services for a variety of clients both on-campus and off. Many of their services are provided pro bono or have very small budgets prompting the students to be very creative in their promotions. This flash mob was created to raise awareness on campus of the services offered by Healthy Sooners.

Two Journalism Alumni Inducted Into Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame

Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame 2010

Nine journalists were inducted into the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame on April 9, two of which are University of Oklahoma journalism alumni, Andy Rieger and Mike Boettcher. Boettcher also provided the keynote address for the ceremony.

John "Andy" Rieger (News Comm., 1980) is executive editor of the Norman Transcript and has worked on community newspapers throughout the state for more than 30 years. He also is chairman of the advisory committee of the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation as well as serves as adjunct professor at Gaylord College periodically.

Mike Boettcher (Journalism, 1975) helped launch the first 24-hour news channel, CNN. He has been a foreign correspondent and reporter for NBC, ABC, CNN and the BBC. He recently spent a year embedded with troops in Afghanistan and is currently teaching a new generation of journalists as the Gaylord College Visiting Professional Professor. He can't wait to get back to the front for his summer vacation. We can't wait to get him back safe and sound in the Fall!

Immigration in the Heartland Conference

Warren ViethFifteen U.S. journalists were chosen to take part in an innovative fellowship program to report on the complexities of immigration with clarity, depth and context.

The program, "Immigration in the Heartland," was conducted by the Institute for Justice and Journalism (IJJ) in partnership with the Gaylord College and its Institute for Research and Training. The conference was funded by a grant from the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation.

The program opened April 10 with discussions with experts, field reporting and professional workshops in Norman, Okla., and in Oklahoma City. The program then moved to Dallas, Texas, April 14-16, to concentrate on immigration law, immigration courts and a briefing by officials of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

IJJ Senior Fellow Warren Vieth (1977, journalism), visiting professor at Gaylord College, served as project director and directed a student task force to plan and execute the conference.

From OU to the Oscar's: Gaylord College's Connections to the Awards, Part II

Annie Terracina & Mary GarisLast month we told you about
Mark Monroe one of two OU and Gaylord College connections to this year's Oscar awards. This month we share the story of a recent grad who found herself on the red carpet.

Gaylord College's second connection to the Oscar's is one of the behind-the-scenes superstars that plan and execute the ceremony. Annie Terracina, 2008 public relations, has spent the last three years working behind the scenes coordinating the many events leading up to the actual ceremony, developing a social media campaign for the awards and helping direct traffic on the Red Carpet. Annie (left) is shown here with best friend and fellow Gaylord graduate, Mary Garis (PR 2008).
