Receive 21 Awards from the Oklahoma SPJ


SPJ LogoThe staff of The Oklahoma Daily and several Gaylord College students were recognized as among Oklahoma's top journalists by the Oklahoma Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. The Daily staff competed at the professional level with other state newspapers with circulations between 7,000 and 24,999 to win 21 awards. See the full list of OU winners.
War and Media Students Finally Meet

Boettcher meets students

Mike Boettcher, former CNN and NBC journalist and OU alumnus, returned to OU Thursday to meet for the first time a group of students he communicated with every week for a semester.

Boettcher communicated with students for "War and Media," a course offered to journalism and mass communication and international and area studies students, while working as an embedded journalist in Iraq for 15 months. Read the article from The Daily.

Advertising Students Travel to Singapore and Hong Kong Over Winter Break

Advertising professor Jim Avery took 12 students to visit the top advertising agencies in Asia during the Jan. 2009 intersession. The group was away from Jan. 7 to Jan. 18. The International Advertising class met for a few sessions prior to the travel portion of the class. While in Hong Kong and Singapore, the group visited top agencies such as Saatchi & Saatchi, DDB, Ogilvy, Grey, Draft/FCB, TBWA, M & C Saatchi and Leo Burnett. Read more about the trip and see photos.

Two Receive Hearst Writing Awards

Hearst AwardsTwo Gaylord College students have received awards in the first round of the Hearst Journalism Awards in the Editorial Writing category. Hailey Branson (journalism junior) received sixth place and Lindsey Allgood (professional writing senior) received seventh place. Both will receive $500 scholarships from the Hearst Foundation. Ten students were chosen to represent Gaylord College and the University of Oklahoma as staff members of ESPNU Campus Connection during the Men's Basketball match up against Nebraska on Jan. 21. The students were asked to report, produce and maintain the quality production values ESPN is known for during live broadcasts. Read more about the broadcast and see photos from the day.
