New Web Cam Shows Construction on Phase II of Gaylord Hall
Construction on Phase II
The new wing of Gaylord College is well underway. We have installed a new Web cam to share the construction progress with our extended family. With all the new steel going up almost daily, the structure is really beginning to take shape. Link to Web cam.
 

Meet Our First Ph.D. Candidates
Gaylord College welcomed our first group of Ph.D. students this fall. We had a small, but diverse group of candidates from South Korea, China, and the U.S. with research interests in media and religion, intercultural
communication, public relations and broadcasting. Read more about the Ph.D. program.
 
Gaylord Students Compete in Hearst Newswriting Championships
Tiara Etheridge & Warren VeithUniversity of Oklahoma journalism senior, Tiara Etheridge, placed second in the feature writing competition of the 48th annual William Randolph Hearst Foundation's Journalism Awards Program. Read Etheridge's article, Taking Mind, at hub.ou.edu.

Oklahoma Daily Editor Ashiq Zaman was also awarded a certificate of merit in the Editorial Writing competition for his "PowerPoint Ineffective" editorial, which examined the use of the popular presentation software as a teaching aid in many college classes. Zaman and placed in the top 20 from a field of 102 student journalists representing 61 colleges and universities. Read Zaman's article, PowerPoint Ineffective, at hub.ou.edu.
Digital Initiative/JMC Week 2007
Reggie Murphy, Dir. of Research Services at GannettProfessionals from Yahoo, The New York Times, Publicis Dialogue, Cox Communications, Edelman Public Relations, The Oklahoman, Tribal DDB, Gannett News, Progressive Interactive, and The Hill visited with students as part of the college's first journalism and mass communication week in recent years. This year the theme was "The Digital Initiative" and centered around content-producers, consumers, and interactive media. Read more and view the full agenda on jmc.ou.edu.
Visiting Professor Al Eisele, Introduces Students to Diverse Speakers
Al Eisele, Editor at Large, The HillAl Eisele, founding editor of The Hill newspaper in Washington, D.C. and blogger for the Huffington Post, served as Distinguished Visiting Professor at Gaylord Hall for the fall 2007 semester. Eisele taught Public Affairs Reporting and Media and Politics courses to undergraduate journalism students.

During the course of the semester, Eisele invited numerous high-profile speakers and previous colleagues to share their experiences with his students. Eisele's guests included former Senator David Durenberger (R), Minnesota; Clark Hoyt, public editor and ombudsman for The New York Times; John Callahan, author and literary executor to Ralph Ellison; Gina Cavallaro, a reporter for the Army Times; Jennifer Senior, New York Magazine; Ed Kelley, editor, The Oklahoman; Will Stebbins, Washington, D.C. Bureau Chief, Al Jazeera; Fran McMahon, publisher of The Hill; and Dr. Werner Peters, German author and political scientist.
 
Gen. George Casey Visits Gaylord College

George CaseyAs a guest of Al Eisele, General George Casey, Army Chief of Staff and former Commander of the Multinational Forces in Iraq from 2004 to 2007 addressed students, faculty, staff and ROTC cadets. Casey gave two speeches about the nature of modern warfare and the role the media can play in helping citizens understand the situation. Above left, Gaylord student Monica Albert gets some advice from General Casey at the dinner.

Gaylord College Empowers Bangladeshi Women Journalists
Bangladeshi women journalists visit media outlets across OklahomaThe Gaylord College family hosted the last group of visiting Bangladeshi women journalists this fall. Part of a three-year, state department grant program started by Dean Joe Foote while at Arizona State, the six women spent time touring Oklahoma media outlets and learning media management and general leadership skills. A new $360,000 grant scheduled to begin in 2008 will expand the outreach to Nepal and Pakistan.

Professor Teaches Dream Course
Paula Ausick, Sr. VP of Strategy & Planning at Euro RSCG/ChicagoAdvertising Professor Jim Avery brought some of the leading talents in advertising from around the world to share their experiences with Gaylord students as part of his Fall 2007 Dream Course. As part of the curriculum for Advertising Account Planning, visiting lecturers included Santosh Desai, CEO/MD,FutureBrands/
Delhi; Stuart Smith, Planning Director, Wieden & Kennedy/London; Marc-Antoine Jarry, Director of Strategic Planning, Ogilvy/Paris; and, Graeme Read, Director of Asia Regional Planning for McCann Healthcare/Singapore and Paula Ausick, Senior Vice President and Director of Strategy & Planning, Euro RSCG/Chicago shown here with students.

The Dream Course is an initiative of President Boren and the Provost Office whereby OU faculty submit a proposal for one-time funding of $20,000 to enhance an undergraduate course. With the extra money, professors are able to invite a number of experts of national or international stature in their fields to visit the Norman campus and interact with students.
Advertising Students Take Madison Avenue by Storm
Ad students take Madison Avenue by StormGaylord College advertising students took New York City by storm in October.  Headquartered in the Hotel Pennsylvania, an eager group of advertising students visited four agencies during the day and various other NYC venues at night.

Starting with McCann Erickson on Thursday morning, the group led by professor David Tarpenning, visited MTV in the afternoon. The next day began with a visit to Weiden + Kennedy, followed by Publicis Dialog in the afternoon. Former Sooners Maria Real at McCann, Toby Leddy at MTV and Debby Yount at Publicis showed the students what it's like to work in the Big Apple.
