Greetings!
Welcome to part two of our November Newsletter!
The Gray Institute just completed its 2009 Mentorship, we hosted our third of three live gatherings throughout 2009 with great success! There were 80 graduates of Applied Functional Science this year! For those thinking about the 2010 class please contact Doug Gray @ 866.230.8300 - act immediately, as registration is quickly filling for 2010.
This month our 2008 graduate of Applied Functional Science Will Stewart CMT, FAFS has put together a great article on the complex subject of proprioception pay particular attention to his logical progression. We thank Will for simplifying complexity and making it practical.
In the technique section Gary and Doug Gray demonstrate a unique way of facilitating proprioception! In part two, released later this month we will review research and answer your individual questions.
Please send your questions to Lenny Parracino at lenny@kineticconditioning.net before November 20th. Thank you! +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ |

Proprioceptors 101:
How to really get on your clients/patients nerves
Will Stewart CMT, FAFS
In Applied Functional Science, one of the Principles of Function that we anchor to is that Function is three-dimensional (3D). With this Principle, we include tri-planar movements as well as the "3D-ness" of mind, body, and spirit. When we look at the body, we take into consideration the trio of nerves, muscles, and bones that is the NeuroMusculoSkeletal (NMS) System. As I work with many of my athletes and post-rehabilitation clients, I tend to focus my attention on the real and relative joint motion of the bones, as well as the eccentric, concentric, and econcentric actions of the muscles.

This month we decided to share something a bit different seeing as Winter is coming. Gary and Doug Gray traditionally enjoy "tweaking" their basketball game by playing in the first snow fall. Watch this quick clip to view the fun but also the wisdom of what and why they are doing what they are doing. If you have specific questions please send them in and we will get the answers from Gary himself. Keep in mind Doug and Gary are not little kids but sure function like it; hmmm, maybe that is the wisdom...to create an environment for improved function, we should create a playground-type atmosphere for function and fun to integrate. We hope their father / son strategy will facilitate ideas for you and your clients / patients. Enjoy!

Research Roundtable
Proprioceptors...hard to see so how do we train them? An easy answer is simply, we always train them to a degree, they don't go-away but this leads to a more important question...are we training them for a needed intent or just arbitrarily creating movements that potentially are destructive? Dr. Dave Tiberio and Gary Gray discuss how a litmus test of function can be your anchor to knowing when the right variation is the most useful. They discuss creating a "conflict" to challenge the system but then anchoring back to the functional intent - the litmus test, to ensure your on the right path.
Please listen to their discussion, we're sure it will add to your success.

Questions / Answers |
|
We have a special treat in the question and answer section this month. Dr. Dave Tiberio has taken the time out of his schedule to answer both questions in one in-depth video.
The questions are as follows;
1) As a professional, what is the significance of understanding proprioception?
2) Proprioception occurs in all movement, generally speaking - what is the logical, practical progression?
We hope you enjoy.
