Greetings!

Welcome to the Gray Institute's October Newsletter!

For you football lovers, football season is here and for those that don't love football we are sure you love your patients that suffer from neck problems whether its from watching too much football or from playing the game.  Regardless of the skill the neck functions as a reactor like all parts of our miraculous bodies.

This month, Rodney Corn MA, FAFS, Co-founder of PTA Global shares an "enter-active" article that gets us up and moving to appreciate the reactive cervical spine.  Combined with Gary Gray's Transformation clip in the technique section you will no doubt have useful tools for your patients / clients!

Thank you!

The Cervical Spine:
Bottom Up Bobble Head

 Rodney Corn  MA, FAFS

You don't have to be a typical bobble head to enjoy the cervical spine.  With a quick dabble in Applied Functional Science (AFS) we can avoid the embarrassment of a constant bobbling head, ll while employing a "Bottom Up" strategy.  This is going to be an "enter-active" article where you will "enter" into the story and "actively" play out the words.  I hope you don't mind.  So, if you would be so kind, please follow along and enjoy the bobble head ride... Don't be afraid to let out a giggle here and there.

Chain Reaction FunctionGary Gray takes us through the Transformation section of Functional Video Digest DVD titled: The Cervical Spine - Both Ends of the Chain

His demonstration although useful in golf drills can be applied to anyone in the need for better cervical mo-stability.  Keep special attention to how his thoracic spine drives the cervical reaction while thinking how you can apply to anyone you work with.  Remember the principles never change just our application.  For more drills and greater explanation please review all sections of this DVD.

Thanks for joining us!

Research Roundtable

DrTandG2In respect to our primary subject this month - the Cervical Spine; we will start with a question...Should we first address (manual therapists through manipulation/mobilization or trainers through stretching) the known restricted plane of the Cervical Spine or is there a different strategy to improve proper sequential motion?  Dr. Dave Tiberio discusses the research on Cervical Spine sequential motion and Gary Gray PT talks about its relevance and how we can apply strategies.  Get ready for a tweak to traditional thinking!  For the extended version and more information on the Cervical Spine, please see the topic of the Functional Video Digest Series titled Functional Manual Reaction of the Cervical Spine.

Thank you!

Questions / Answers

I am a past attendee of a Chain Reaction Transformation Seminar and Rodney Corn's article reminded me of the Cervical Spine Matrix that you had us all get up and perform.  Could you review this Matrix as it was great for facilitating greater movement of the Cervical Spine?

Can you suggest some movements, exercises, or workouts to help with creating better movement of the Cervical Spine?  From the both the "Bottom-Up" and from the "Top-Down"?
