Greetings!
Welcome to the Gray Institute's September Newsletter! If you haven't viewed our NEW web site, please do so!
You have heard the saying "start with the end in mind?" Well, this month we will explore this saying utilizing the subject of Fundamentals / Skills. We will examine and understand such questions as; "how do we get from fundamentals to skill" and "do children, clients, patients progress too quickly into skill without a solid foundation of movement?" We often look at athletes in sports and praise skills but having a client put on their shoes is also a skill.
So how do we create programs, select manual therapy techniques and/or movements to improve the various skill sets that each of our clients need? To answer these questions and more we are proud to have an article written by Adam Wolf PT, LMT, FAFS titled "Enhancing the Whole through a Part." In addition, we will look at a real life progression taken from a DVD from the Fast Function Educational Series entitled "Fundamentals / Skills".
In part two, which will release later this month we will review research and answer your personal questions.
Please send related questions via e-mail to Lenny Parracino by clicking on the following link: lparracino@grayinstitute.com before September 20th. Thank you! |

Fundamental and Skill:
Enhancing the Whole Through a Part
Adam Wolf PT, LMT, FAFS
This summer I was fortunate to have spent hours in the park with my 3.5 year old daughter, Alexia. Simply spending time in a playful environment, observing how she develops movements that were not possible months ago is a highlight of my life. Lately she has enjoyed playing catch as well as hopscotch, which proves endlessly entertaining because she hasn't quite mastered the developmental skill. Skill is defined as "the learned capacity to carry out pre-determined results often with the minimum outlay of time, energy, or both".

Get ready for the cutest (and most informative) clip yet! Keith Bozyk ATC, FAFS takes his 6-year old daughter Kayla through a fundamental movement progression for the "end-game" function of Hop-Scotch. You will observe Keith take his daughter through individual fundamental movements that encompass the skill of Hop-Scotch. Watch to see each sub-skill practiced through needed transformational zones. This clip should give all practitioners great ideas on how to progress clients to higher level skill-sets!
For more movement examples and explanation of progressions see the Fast Function DVD titled Fundamentals / Skills.
We hope you enjoy!

Research Roundtable
Are we wasting time when we cue a patient/client/athlete to achieve a particular movement or skill? It's been said many ways that balance is the key to life. Balance is the ability to move, exhibit flexibility, strength, etc. It is a culmination of function amongst all body systems yet at what point are we causing "over-thinking" and therefore impeding this very important fundamental component of function? Although you may have seen the following research clip before, keep in mind the aforementioned questions while listening to Dr. Tiberio and Gary Gray, hopefully their discussion and the questions will add to your applied thought process.
Thank you for joining us.
