The Thoracic Spine:
overlooked and undertreated

To say one area of the spine is more important than another would be unfair to the rest of the spine; however, it is clear that when we closely inspect the thoracic spine, it is profoundly different than the cervical or lumbar spine. It typically has twelve segments, many more than the other spinal regions, and it has a ribcage attached to it, providing significant stability and support.

In addition to Nick's mention of the Thoracic Spine Matrix, Gary Gray PT will demonstrate a Jumping Jack Matrix that uses body weight drivers. Gary instructs his client to drive her arms and legs while observing the reaction of the Thoracic Spine in all three dimensions. Remember, the exercise is the test and then the test - tweaked - becomes the new exercise that is individually specific to the client's ability/needs. Stand-up and follow along through your own movement, then transfer to your kids, clients, friends; lets all make it a point to get the world to move more efficiently! We hope you enjoy!

"If the hips aren't movin, the trunk aint grooving and therefore, the thoracic spine is neglected". Simply speaking, that is the summary of what Dr. Tiberio and Gary Gray discuss. You don't want to miss this short clip on their combined 50 years of clinical experience with respect to HOW the Trunk/Thoracic Spine functions. Too often we get muscles to contract symmetrically, often in one plane of motion - especially the sagittal plane - yet the muscles are the cross roads of the trunk and thrive for three-dimensional conditioning.
