Greetings!
Summer is here we hope you all had a great 4th of July!
The Gray Institute team has been going strong at the Hot Rock Boys Basketball Camp here in sunny humid Adrian, Michigan.
July's newsletter will delve into Speed / Reaction as they are essential elements of ALL rehabilitation, training, and conditioning programs. These elements must be tailored to specific tasks, both optimal speed and optimal reaction may be either slow or fast depending on the relative needs for power and precision. Traditional training programs tend to be biased toward maximized speed and reaction in dominant planes of motion, using primary muscle groups often in non-functional ways - we will expand this traditional approach supplying you with many more precise applications to fully and truly enhance one's SPEED and REACTION!
We start with an article by our 2008 Fellow and physical therapist Leizl Adolphi. Leizl describes her experience in her article titled "The Need for Speed". This is followed by our technique section where Gary takes us through a speed and reaction drill.
In part two, later this month, we will share low back research and answer your questions. Please send questions to Lenny Parracino at lparracino@grayinstitute.com prior to July 24th.
Thank you and we look forward to another exciting month!

The Need for Speed
Leizl Adolphi, PT, FAFS
You've just been passed an oblong ball and now have 6 men averaging 250 pounds rapidly moving toward you. They are coming from all different directions, with what seems like inhuman speed and agility for men of that stature. You hope that the adrenaline that is currently surging through your system, along with your training & conditioning, has made you faster and better able to out-maneuver your opponents, as you hurry toward the goal post 40 yards away.

Research Roundtable
Our emphasis this month is the need to understand and apply the variation of movement-speed to all clientele, not just for the competitive athletic population. To assist us in this application we have linked a clip of Dr. Dave Tiberio and Gary Gray discussing the question...how much motion and what sequence are we after in the movement? Once answered, how do we get this reaction to occur without conscious effort? We are sure you will enjoy their discussion.

1. Especially with training for reaction, how do we guarantee the safety of our patients and clients?
2. Knowing that there are many components to develop and to integrate in order to enhance speed, what do you consider a key component to be developed with everyone?
