Greetings!
We hope everyone had a great month! Thank you for your many questions last month, keep them coming.
This month, we will focus on the cross-road of the body...the LOW BACK. So many of us have dealt with low back pain be it personally and/or professionally. There must be a reason WHY so many people suffer. Maybe it's not the low back's fault, maybe the pain is simply the messenger and the source(s) of the message lies elsewhere? Knowing the low back's function can be complex. However, by following a principle based approach we can at the least create environments for healing to take place.
This month one of our 2009 students of Applied Functional Science Michael Rizkwrites about his clients experience and how he applies principles to create a strategy for success. In addition, Doug Gray performs portions of the CORE CONVERSION workout, which provides an environment for optimal back health.
In part two, later this month, we will share low back research and answer your questions. Please send questions to Lenny Parracino at lparracino@grayinstitute.com prior to June 18th.
Thank you we look forward to another exciting month!

Have you ever witnessed a relationship gone sour? The telltale signs are significant, but many times the root cause stems from poor communication. There is one particular area of the body that seems to get more press than a short-lived Hollywood hook-up. You've got it - the lumbar spine (LS) is likely the most injured, dysfunctional, and (supposedly) weakest link of the body. In relation to the rest of the body, the LS is active in nearly every functional task performed ... it resides at the crossroads of the body.

The CORE CONVERSION, part of the Gray Institute's 3D Matrix Performance Series, is a workout that utilizes upright positioning, as well as prone positioning, in performing a specific sequencing of lifts, lunges with lifts, squats, squat thrusts and push-ups. The following video clip is a small portion of the many helpful movements for low back health. In fact, this workout tweaked for each client / patient can be used as a primary "go-to" for back health!
For the workout in its entirety please see the DVD titled CORE CONVERSION. Enjoy!

Research Roundtable
Reactions BEFORE actions. Click on the image to hear the insights of Dr. Dave Tiberio and Gary Gray PT with regards to spinal stability - the often debated topic. Dave and Gary talk about what the research has shown and relate to their many years of experience, using the principles of Applied Functional Science. Although technology is important, it still has limitations we need to apply the universally accepted principles of human function for proper observation and client / patient application. Listen to their talk and relate their discussion back to the Core Conversion video clip; as you will see the Core Conversion workout is the application to this discussion and can be used as your assessment / conditioning tool. We hope you enjoy!

Questions / Answers |

1. In many training environments there is a lot of cognitive association with lifting, and exercises in general. However, if I understand your comment reactions before actions - Is teaching too much conscious thought potentially decreasing our clients/ patients ability to function? Please help me to understand your comment.
2. Is their potential danger of damaging the spine with repetitive tensing of the trunk muscles during daily and sporting activities?
