Greetings!

Thank you for joining The Gray Institute for another exciting issue of our newsletter.  This month we will focus on the hip complex.  It has been stated one out of four older adults will experience hip osteoarthritis with this statistic most likely to climb.  Although function will always humble us, we as a profession need to look at this closely and create preventive programs.

This month we will share thoughts and techniques that will assist you in designing a "happy-healthy-hip" program.  To assist us we are proud to introduce Barbara Fuller, PT, FAFS; Barbara has submitted an article titled "The Hip - Power Source, Biggest Rock, Best Friend".  Barbara uses a real life patient and explains how she applied physical science, biological and behavorial science together to overcome fear, encourage success and help her patient improve her authentic function - great job Barbara!

In the technique section Gary Gray takes us through a three-dimensional squat routine that stresses the hip from all angles, different depths, different loads, etc, were sure you will enjoy his application of Applied Functional Science principles.

Please ask us questions and submit them before April 17th to Lenny Parracino at lparracino@grayinstitute.com.

Thank you we look forward to another exciting month!

THE HIP: PowerSource, Biggest Rock, Best Friend
Barbara Fuller, PT, FAFS

The late-seventyish woman looked at me with a bit of skepticism mixed with a little fear. After I introduced myself to her she said, "Before we start I want you to know that I would like for you to address my low back pain but I don't want you to mess with my hip." When I urged her, she further explained that she'd had problems with her right hip for a long time, with X-rays revealing severe arthritis and necrosis of the femoral head. She had been to an orthopedist who told her to come back for a total hip replacement when she could not stand the pain anymore.

Gary_and_JOSquatting...one of the basic fundamental patterns of movement!  Squatting is simply a vertical collapsing.  Gary Gray takes us through various ways to vertically collapse to enrich the function of the hip complex.  Performed daily in you own routine is strongly recommended to avoid the ill effects of the chair-borne society.  Enjoy!

Research Roundtable

Chain Reaction FunctionFor April's research corner Gary and Dr. Dave Tiberio discuss the views on groin injuries.  Dave will share different injury statistics while Gary emphasizes the need to look at the results from a three-dimensional perspective. Gary's insight leads us to how we need to test, treat and condition the groin; although Gary shares a practical example using hockey, the strategy can be applied to anyone.

We hope you enjoy!

The Core Conversion

Core_Conversion

The Gray Institute announces the first installment of:
 The 3D Matrix
 Performance Series

"The CORE CONVERSION"

The Core Conversion workout is an efficient and effective way to train the body's true "core" - the nose to the toes - in all three planes of motion, utilizing a strategic sequencing of lifts, lunges, squats, squat thrusts, and push-ups.

This workout is the perfect blend of strength training, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance that trains the body to not only feel better, but to function better.

The Core Conversion is a necessity to any workout program - either as a standalone or as a compliment - that can be tweaked accordingly for different ages and abilities in order to maximize and expand one's functional threshold.

Watch for upcoming issues of the 3D Matrix Performance Series to be released throughout the year.
