NEW Seminars presented in-house
Greetings!

Well, a month has past us already. Thank you for your feedback regarding last month's Functional Flexibility. We listen to all of your comments which forms the direction of this newsletter, again thank you!  In this month's TWO part newsletter we will emphasize foot/ankle function starting with our own Dr. Dave Tiberio and his article entitled Calcaneal Eversion, the switch that turns on the engine.  This article will be followed by the technique section where Gary Gray evaluates and treats his clients foot/ankle complex using various body angles and comparing right to left. See if you can pick out the difference between the clients right and left foot/ankle complex.  We then follow this technique video clip with Gary's homeworkable solution.  In part TWO the newsletter will review foot/ankle research and its practical significance followed by our popular, you ask the question, we functionally answer.  Thank you so much, we look forward to another exciting month!

CALCANEAL EVERSION:
The Switch That Turns on the Engine

GRAVITY, GROUND, and the SWITCH
The internal power sources that drive the body are the hips and trunk: the core of the body.  There are many ways to activate that power source, but probably the most important for upright function in our gravitational environment is eversion of the calcaneus.>READ MORE<

Calf StretchOur emphasis this month is on foot/ankle mo-stability. Gary Gray takes us through a quick comparative foot/ankle assessment of dorsiflexion/inversion and dorsiflexion/eversion both with an extended knee and flexed knee. On his client you will notice a significant difference between sides (see if you can pick this out). >VIEW VIDEO< Gary then follows this by giving a homeworkable movement to mobilize the calcaneus both in inversion/eversion from a dorsiflexed, hip extended position.  After observing refer back to Dr. Dave's article to gain an even greater appreciation to the why this movement was chosen for Gary's client.>VIEW VIDEO<

Research Roundtable

Welcome to the research roundtable! This month our focus is on the foot/ankle complex and we are proud to share an article written by Dr. Dave Tiberio entitled Pathomechanics of Structural Foot Deformities.  Although written 20 years ago, this information is still valid with respect to structure. As practitioners, it is important to understand the relationship-integration between structure and function during analysis, rehabilitation and conditioning as opposed to "jumping" to conclusions once a structural deformity is identified. To aid in this thought process we have added a link from Functional Video Digest v1.4 entitled the Foot where Dr. Dave Tiberio and Gary Gray discuss research and how orthotics may or may not fit into the chain reaction concepts.   Enjoy!

Real Questions/Real Answers

G2Welcome to our question and answer link!  We invite all questions from YOU.  Please submit your questions to lparracino@grayinstitute.com  we will search for the best person to answer and then respond as soon as possible.

Q: I understand the importance of calcaneal eversion and it turning on the system, but what about in a sprint situation where the heel doesn't hit the ground?

Q: Gary, you often mention building a "butt" orthotic, can you define and expand on this strategy?
