Greetings!
First, we want to thank everyone for all the great questions / feedback received last month. Our readership is expanding each month and this is great fuel for us, THANK YOU!! This month our journey of function will take us to the powerful-friendly hip complex. Complex it is, friendly it can be; alas, if it functions efficiently! It is easy to see why the hips are the most powerful area of the body when viewing all the powerful muscles surrounding it, in addition to its large motion capabilities. When the hips move well, life is easy, when they're not moving well, it makes life's movements difficult. One interesting fact to keep in mind during evaluation or during treatment and conditioning, is the interdependency the pelvic girdle offers in function. In other words, we cannot isolate one hip joint from the other. They act as an interconnected ring which means they "feed" each other during movement; this should spawn a "hmmmmmm" during evaluation, treatment and conditioning. In our journey to understand more about this complex, we will start with an article written by Joe Przytula, ATC, FAFS titled "THE HIPS: The monster beneath the bed". Joe shares with us a simple yet fun article - please print this one and share with your colleagues! In this month's technique section, Gary Gray and Keith Bozyk share an advanced groin (hip) stretching sequence, although they perform the technique with hurdles, they are not necessary. Part Two, which you will receive later this month, will summarize research reviews from Dr. Tiberio with commentary from Gary. If you have any questions this month the deadline is June 17th. This one's a "keeper", seeing as most of us (as well as our patients / clients) sit too much. Keith demonstrates a groin mobilization sequence that we all can apply. SMART hurdles are used in the demo - great tool to own, however without smart hurdles, you will still benefit from the technique! Research Roundtable
We are excited to share a new research roundtable topic this month, the HIP. Over the next five minutes we will show a clip from the Functional Video Digest: The Hip - 3D Power. In this clip Dr. Dave Tiberio and Gary Gray PT discuss their views on research pertaining to hip function and depths of motion during landing (foot into ground). Question 1) The hips joints are part of the pelvic girdle which is an interdependent ring therefore in movement the hips joints must work together "feeding" off one another. Knowing this, what assessment strategy would you recommend? In addition would you please share the difference in populations? >VIEW ANSWER< Question 2) Capsular tightness is often a culprit in hip-whole body dysfunction. Although every patient / client is different and adapts at different rates, can you share in your clinical experience what hip capsule stretches have been successful?
