Strength Training 101 |
|
|
|
How do you get more long-lasting energy? Long-Lasting Energy can be achieved with "moderate exercise" like a 10- or 15-minutes on the tredmill. When exercising for energy, you should always aim to exercise in your low to moderate training heart rate range. This will prevent you from depleting your body. Then once you're energized you may feel good enough to do some more! Or move on to a strength training program! Of course, what's moderate for some may be too little for others, and keep in mind that the more you exercise, the easier it becomes for you, and the higher your threshold of "moderate" will become (so strive for longer/faster/harder workouts over time as you gain strength & endurance). In addition to moderate cardio, you can try classes like yoga, pilates, and strength training especially when done with slow, deliberate muscle-concentrating motions. While experts agree that moderate movement is key to increasing energy, even if you overdo it, your end result may still be less fatigue! Awesome! Regardless of what energy-producing exercise you choose, you can get more out of your exercise time by eating properly before and after your workout. Also remember to drink plenty of water before, during, and after working out to help decrease workout-related fatigue. Dehydration is an important cause of fatigue, so to get the most energy out of every workout, be sure to stay well hydrated.
If you would like help starting or changing your strength-training routine, please schedule an appointment with one of our trainers to learn proper form & function and to incorporate new exercises! All new annual members receive 2 free training sessions, so if you have not used yours yet, you can use them now! All additional sessions start at $80/hour and are Personal Training is a fantastic investment in your health and future. Gift Certificates are always available for birthday & holiday ideas! "FITNESS" doesn't have to be your "life" but it does have to be your "LIFESTYLE" Leanne
Certifications ACE Certified Personal Trainer ACE Certified Healthy Lifestyle & Weight Management Coach JONNY G SPIN Certified Instructor CPR and First Aid Certified Cardio Kickboxing Highlights/Experience Body Building Competition 2001 - 1st Place Figure Competition 2005 - 2nd Place Worked with Post-Surgery/Rehab clients Sports-Specific Training Clients Male/Female, all fitness levels, all ages My business is about your success! I will provide for you, a professional, motivating, focused and fun atmosphere of one-on-one quality and result producing training. Your structured program will provide for you the tools to set and attain safe and realistic goals. This will include fitness assessment, body comp testing/measurements, nutritional counseling, resistance and cardiovascular training. All bases will be covered and you will know exactly what to do every time you train with or without me. I have been a Personal Trainer for 9+ years. I not only have the opportunity to promote a healthy and fit lifestyle through my work, but I live it as well. On a personal level, over the years, I have always had a passion for working out and it led me to start competing. I started doing Bodybuilding in 2001 and placed 1st in my first show. Later in 2005, I crossed over to Figure Competitions and placed 2nd in my first show. I have taken a long break from competing, but definitely plan to do more shows in the future. I have also enjoyed running 5K's and half marathons. After training for some time, to challenge myself, I decided to run my first Marathon in Arizona for Team In Training to raise money for the Lukemia and Lyphoma Society. Testimonials: I've been at Devon Fitness for years and I was working hard on my own but getting nowhere! I started training with Leanne and I finally started seeing the results I wanted! I'm just over 50 and I was spending 2 hours/day working out on my own (an hour of cardio, and an hour of strength machines alternating upper- & lower-body workouts), but I never saw any results! Leanne has cut my workouts down to 1 hour and I'm getting so much more out of them! Working out with Leanne has cut my time in half and I leave feeling like I really accomplished something! I leave feeling exhausted but great and very satisfied! Her upbeat personality makes me want to come in and train, her positive attitude on life keeps me motivated and most of all, her knowledge really helps me and my individual needs. I have a history of a bad back and she knows just what to do to keep it safe yet super-effective for the strength and sculpting that I want. She always keeps the intensity high so I accomplish much more than I would on my own! The result: She keeps me coming back for more! I feel great and I'm getting the results I want in a much more time-effective manner, so I have more time and energy for other aspects of my life! ~ Michelle Schilgen
If you would like to schedule an appointment with Leanne, you can contact the front desk. She is available by appointment Monday - Friday 8am - 5pm. |

How Much Is Enough? Any effective fitness program will invariably include some form of resistance training because working with weights provides a wide range of worthwhile benefits. In addition to building and maintaining muscular strength, strength training helps to maintain your bone density and counteract the effects of osteoporosis. Weight training also burns calories, and helps in a weight loss program. And, a vigorous workout with weights can provide a cardiovascular benefit as well. Since our free weights and resistance training machines range from 3 lbs. to 600 lbs., how much weight is appropriate for you? And how much is excessive? If curling 50 pounds was beneficial, quadrupling the weight wouldn't provide four times the benefit. For your own workout, how do you know what to choose? First, realize that there practical limits to any exercise program. The washboard abs and bulging muscles you see on magazine covers are only possible with an extremely small portion of the general population. Second, regardless of your body type, start with reasonable weights and work your way up. This will give you a combination of smooth progress with minimal risk of injury. Finally, learn to listen to your body. The muscular burn of sustained effort and the pain of injury are quite different. In a typical set of 10 repetitions, your last few should require real effort and produce a burning feeling in the muscles. If you can only do two or three reps altogether, your weight is excessive. If you feel a sudden, sharp pain, stop immediately. Pain is a warning sign that you have done too much. Injuries can take a very long time to heal, and interrupt your fitness program. Avoid injury by using common sense in weight selection. And, when in doubt, see any of our professional personal trainers who can create a customized program specific to you and your needs. Nutrition Nuggets from The Nutrition Coach |
It's Not About the Calories Since Summer is here, many of us are very conscious of our bodies and food seems to be our enemy. If dieting and weight loss were as easy as "calories in, calories out," we would have it all mastered! However, the body is much more complicated than the diet industry would have us believe. Yes, reducing the amount you eat will lead to weight loss. However, what else are you losing? Your mind, muscle, and metabolism all sink to the floor when you jump on a low-calorie diet that promises you a miracle in only 30 days to 3 months. You didn't gain the weight that quickly, so don't expect permanent weight loss to happen that quickly, either. We are a quick-fix society, always looking for the easy way out. Proper food selection isn't easy. Anyone who has dieted or struggled to achieve optimal body composition knows that. Nor is the solution found outside yourself in the next fad diet. Nutrition, weight control and all that encompasses health represent a lifelong journey and educational process.
When calories are cut too low, as on most traditional diet programs, the body shuts down to conserve energy to reduce the amount of food it needs to survive. To protect itself and its organs, the body goes into starvation mode and retains as many calories as possible, thereby making it harder to lose weight. Aside from the physical ramifications, there is a psychological component. You can become terrified of eating out and develop a total lack of trust on how to feed yourself outside of the "program's guidelines". We can help you learn how to manage weight without an outside source dictating every morsel of food that crosses your lips.
Beyond calorie-restriction, It's important to know your metabolic rate (the efficiency at which your body functions) and your body fat percentage. Continuous measurement of these two components will enable us to develop a custom meal plan to accommodate your lifestyle, your medical history and your goals. You see, your metabolism changes in response to its environment. As the environment (food & exercise) changes, monitoring your metabolism's response allows us to continuously tailor the plan to motivate your body to lose fat safely ─ without compromising your mind or metabolism. Through testing we can recognize plateaus and help you to break through them by knowing your body's response to the plan. This way we work in harmony with your body's needs as opposed to fighting them. We also provide motivational counseling, emotional support and insight into your behaviors, beliefs and actions so that you can manage the plan and achieve your goals.
Working with us is about rediscovering your individual needs regarding food, energy level, optimal health and metabolism. By creating a program designed for your needs, preferences, body composition, emotions around food and metabolism we will help you in achieving your personal best. .
