Our Christmas tree is on the sidewalk awaiting either a snowstorm to cover it up or a pick-up - I suspect snow will come first! In our house we move from a major open house on Hogmanay (New Years) to getting ready for Burns Night. Many of you head south to avoid the snow, north to enjoy the winter, or just settle in with a good book in front of a roaring fire.

Wherever you are, we can still ship an order to you! We've shipped to airplane hangers, cruise ship docks and even fancy resorts - so if you want your favorite Scottish foods, we'll find a way to get them to you!

Sincerely,

January 25th Is Robert Burns Night

In 1801, a group of the poet's friends gathered to celebrate the life of Robert Burns. It was July marking the 5th anniversary of his death. The next year, they met on January 29th and this became the night for Burns Suppers until years later when someone checked the church register and found his actual birth date was January 25th! Seems they had it wrong for years.

Why Burns Night?

Whether you like his poetry, his songs or just the fact that he grew up a farmers son educated at home to become the most celebrated Scottish poet in his life time to this very day, we celebrate his short, prolific life. Inspired by the stories and songs taught by his mother's old maid, Burns collected old songs, tales and stories and put them on paper for the first time. He went to create his own and embellish on many of the old tales, changing a few lines here, adding verses there. The results, the equivalent of a rock star today - fame, fleeting fortune, and perhaps too much attention!

His verses ring as true today as they did over 250 years ago - they inspire us, move us and for a moment, take us away from our everyday lifes and make us dream.

WHY HAGGIS?Presentation Haggis

One of Burns most quoted poems on Burns Night is the Address to the Haggis. While many have heard it recited for years, few realize this poem is the ultimate 'in your face' democratic poem. Burns is saying the food - haggis - is just a good as the weathly man's food, a French ragout or fricasse, and likewise, the common man is a good as the wealthy man.

In fact, haggis is good for you! Ours does not have the traditional 'pluck' of heart, liver, lungs and tripe - simply good lamb breast, oatmeal, onions, a touch of beef liver for texture, and spices. Good haggis should be crumbly and slightly spicy. Try it, and we think you'll agree, it's tasty! One pound is only $12.50.

We even have a vegetarian haggis for $10 a pound - carrots, mushrooms, red beans, oatmeal, onions, pine nuts and spices. Perhaps those at your table scared to try the real thing will enjoy a spoonful!
