All Souls Day
Greetings!

There were three men standing at the Pearly Gates. St. Peter came out to meet them and asked, "What would you like to hear your relatives and friends sat at your funeral?"

The first man answered, "I am reknowned doctor, and I would love to hear someone say how I had been instrumental in saving people's lives and giving them a second chance."

The second man replied, "I am a family man and a school teacher. I would like to hear someone say what a great husband and father I was and that I made a difference in some young people's lives."

The third man replied, "Wow guys, those are all really great things, but I guess if I had the chance I would rather hear someone say, 'Look! He's moving!'"
At this time of the year, with the leaves dying and the days getting shorter, the Church starts to think about death. But we think of death not to mourn the fact that we will all one day die, rather to celebrate eternal life.

We know by faith that the dead will rise again, just as Christ rose again. And all who have died with Christ will live with him forever in heaven. So yesterday we celebrated All Saints Day. It's a day to celebrate our Faith in Christ, our Faith in the Resurrection of Christ from the dead, our Faith that He will raise his followers (us!) from the dead to live with him forever as his saints in heaven.

We celebrate by going to Mass. Why? Because at every Mass, God makes present for us here and now through the ministry of his priests the death of Christ on the Cross and his rising again to life. For this reason, All Saints Day is a day of "holy obligation"-- a day we must get to Mass, unless other duties prevent us.

You can read more about All Saints Day here: http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/01315a.htm

Today is All Souls Day. We know that not everyone who dies is a saint yet. We're not all ready to go to heaven when we die. Most of us still have a lot of sin to deal with. God, in his great mercy, deals with our sin for us-- He purifies is, purges us of all our sin, before we enter into heaven. After all, who would want to have to deal with sin and failure forever?

And just as we can share salvation with others by telling them about Christ, we can share with others Christ's ministry of purging sin, by offering our prayers and sacrifices for others. After all, if we are members of Christ's Body, the Church, all his prayers and sacrifices are ours, and all of ours are his! We can offer up prayers and all the little sacrifices of our day for the souls who have died and are being purged-- all the holy souls in Purgatory.

You can read more about All Souls Day here: http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/01315b.htm

When you have the time, do some research into the Saints, Purgatory and Indulgences. Then send me your questions.

God bless,
Pavel

About Us
Catholics Seeking Christ (CSC) is a movement among young adult Catholics who are striving to know Christ and follow him in their lives, particularly within their vocation of serving their country in the armed forces.

CSC groups, comprised of 8-10 Catholic young adult military personnel, meet together regularly for discussions about faith, as well as for prayer and fellowship. Groups are led by young adult peers who receive training, resources, and continued guidance and support from the Office of Young Adult Ministries of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA.
