Opening Reception: Friday, February 3,  from 6-9 pm 

 

A series of spatially engaging portraits, interactive sculpture, and full sensory awareness stations that heighten the viewer's engagement through Individual interactions shared with the Artist.

 

Performers in the installation:

Lacey Wozny will be initiating Palo Santo smoke immersions.

Stephen Bushman will be serving handmade Chai.

Maria Calderon will be serving root and herbal medicinal teas in mason jars.

Dalton Carter and Jim Button will be at the check in table distributing Astrological sashes.

Pedro Calderon will be providing improvisational music on Andean pan flutes throughout the evening upon the fall of each hour.

Live music by Andean Express.

Corazones Valientes

Mattie Rhodes Gallery is excited to introduce Kansas City to the Corazones Valientes(Brave Hearts), a collective group of female painters and muralists from the village of  La Unión de Monterrey, San Carlos, in northern Costa Rica.  The side gallery will feature new works from Corazones Valientes artists'  Toribia Mayrena Guido, Marina Méndez Cruz, Patricia Quesada Méndez, Viria Salas Araya, Luz Ríos Duarte, Ivannia Zambrana Ríos, Lany Zambrana Ríos, and Esmeralda Rivera Ruíz.   For the past nineteen years, the Corazones Valientes have been exhibiting and selling paintings of tropical landscapes and colorful scenes of rural life across the United States, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Their artwork has also been published  in several children's books, posters and cards.

Juan Chawuk

In conjunction with the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, Mattie Rhodes Center presents Juan Chawuk, a Tojolobal Maya from Las Margaritas, Chiapas, Mexico, located near the famed Palenque Mayan Ruins.  Chawuk is a painter, muralist, sculptor, photographer, and graphic artist  who has been in solo and group exhibitions throughout Mexico and the United States. Recently, Chawuk conducted arts workshops in Turin, Italy, and Bogota and Cartagena, Columbia. The main gallery will highlight new works by Chawuk, and there will be a series of events, artist lectures and workshops coinciding with the exhibition.
