News from Mattie Rhodes Center     Fall 2008
Dear Mattie Rhodes Supporter,

Thank you for your interest in Mattie Rhodes Center. As we enter our 115th year, we want to take every opportunity to keep our supporters updated on important agency milestones and events.  The purpose of our new e-newsletter is to keep you up-to-date and informed.  In addition to our newsletter, we will continue to send you invitations to our art gallery exhibits.  It's hard to believe that the Mattie Rhodes Art Gallery will be celebrating its ten year anniversary in 2009.  Achievements such as these would not be possible without you!  We appreciate your continued support and look forward to serving the community well into this century and beyond.

Sincerely,
John's Signature

 Award for Visionaries Program

Our Visionaries program was selected for the statewide Cutting Edge Service Award for the Missouri Association of County Developmental Disabilities (MACDDS Cutting Edge Award) for 2008.  The award is given to programs that are "unique, inclusive, person centered, respectful, dignified, lead to more interdependence or independence and promote a learning culture in which creativity, innovation and risk taking are supported and where staff feel empowered to provide excellent supports."

MACDDS Award

The Visionaries program works under the umbrella of the Visions with Hope 360º program and serves Latino young adults with developmental disabilities.  The young adults receive transitional services and independent living and social skills trainings.  These skills are taught through meaningful activities involving art, computers, sports and volunteerism.  Visionaries is focused on individual strengths and helps build self- esteem and self confidence.

Cultural Arts Exploration Program

Mattie Rhodes Center is expanding our Latino cultural arts programming by launching a Cultural Arts Explorations Program in the Northeast neighborhood of Kansas City, Missouri.  This program will enhance underserved students' academic skills through after-school multicultural visual arts programming, theater/movement classes, creative writing/spoken word and individual tutoring.  It will take place at our Northeast site at 148 N. Topping in partnership with James Elementary School.

Kauffman Fund

This program is made possible by a generous gift from the Ewing M. Kauffman Fund for Greater Kansas City with the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation as trustee.

Day of the Dead Celebration

Day of the Dead Skeleton
Our ninth annual Día de los Muertos ("Day of the Dead") exhibit is coming to a close.  Events kicked off with our art exhibit opening on the first Friday in October and continued with a street festival the next day.  More than 2,300 people attended these two days of festivities.  To date, 1,300 students and adults from as far away as Wichita and St. Louis have visited our gallery to participate in educational tours and activities.  Additional events included our second First Friday reception in November and workshops for Calacas, Skeleton Marionettes and Ofrendas.

Make sure to stop by Mattie Rhodes Art Gallery to catch the show before it comes down Nov. 20.

Mattie Florence Rhodes

Mattie Florence Rhodes was only 19 when she died of typhoid fever in 1894, leaving $500 to her church group, the Little Gleaners.  They founded the Mattie Rhodes Memorial Society with this pledge: "I promise to do all I can to help the needy and suffering by working for them, learning about them, giving for them, and trying to interest others in them."
