DigbyDIGBY'S FIRST BIRTHDAY PARTY

Just when you least expect it, a special dog teaches you a valuable lesson. For us, that dog is Digby.

Digby came to STAF after he was spotted wandering through Eden Park in search of food, water, shelter ... and anyone that cared. Dehydrated, starving, and exhausted, Digby collapsed when he got to the shelter but even though he lay limp, his tail was wagging and he instantly won our hearts.

Digby was finally in a safe place, but he was far from out of the woods. He had contagious mange and extremely advanced Parvo, a nearly always fatal disease.  He wouldn't eat and could hardly muster the energy to move. Volunteers from STAF aided in his around-the-clock care-hand-feeding him, carrying him to the yard to go the bathroom, and showering him with the kind of love and affection he probably never before knew.  Despite our efforts, Digby's chances of pulling through were slim ... we just weren't sure he would make it to his first birthday.

Miraculously, almost two months later, Digby is on the mend. He is growing stronger every day and has the sweet, gentle nature of a truly grateful dog.  We are planning a First Birthday Party fit for a king in hopeful anticipation that Digby has a full recovery.  And YOU are invited!

Join us on Tuesday, August 10, 2010 from 6:00-10:00pm at RP McMurphy's (2910 Wasson Road) for Digby's First Birthday Party! In lieu of birthday gifts, Digby is asking for a $10 donation to STAF to help cover the cost of his vet care and many others that need our help!

ElyseRESIDENT SPOTLIGHT - ELYSE

Elyse came to us as a tiny kitten with pneumonia last year. She and her siblings had been living with an older woman who was unable to care for multiple sick kittens and no way to get them vet care. We took her in at STAF and with a little love, attention, and medicine; she was healthy and getting into trouble in no time at all!

She was the smallest of her family then, and now at just over a year old, Elyse is still a pipsqueak! She is still small and thin, but that just makes her easy to cradle in your arms like the sweet baby she is. She absolutely loves being petted and held, and is not shy to remind you that she needs your love.  She loves to follow you around to see what you're doing, and possibly interrupt you for some snuggles or a head scratch. She may even climb right into your lap or onto your back and give you a hug. She has a great personality - very curious and friendly.

Elyse would love to find a home with lots of attention, and maybe even a cat brother or sister to help keep her out of mischief! Could you be her new home?

Stop by to meet Elyse during STAF adoptions on Thursdays from 6:00-8:00pm or Saturdays from 1:00-4:00pm.

DeuceRESIDENT SPOTLIGHT - DEUCE

In a recent conversation with one of our new adopted doggy-moms, she commented how surprised her friends were at the "normalcy" of her new family member. A popular misperception is that all shelter dogs are damaged ... or problem dogs ... or have some issue that makes them unwanted and unlovable. Oh, so not true! And for proof, I offer up Deuce.

Deuce was first spotted roaming alone in a park. A running group trotted by, Deuce thought that looked like fun, and joined in! One of the big-hearted runners took him home, certain that someone must be missing such a good-natured little guy. But despite repeated efforts to reunite him with his family via a microchip, apparently nobody wanted him back. Their loss. Deuce is a lover of people and of life. Just an all-around sweetheart wrapped up in an adorable package. When we introduce him to families during adoption days, he snuggles up to everyone like a long-lost friend. By our vet's best-guess, Deuce is a young 6, with plenty of energy to keep up with an active, fun-loving family.

We have lots of dogs who have made their way to STAF by no fault of their own. Their former families moved, had babies, lost jobs, or for some other reason no longer had the time/money/energy/interest to keep them around. Sad? Yup. But they are ready and waiting for their happy endings at STAF.

Stop by to meet Deuce and all of wonderful dogs during STAF adoptions on Thursdays from 6:00-8:00pm or Saturdays from 1:00-4:00pm.
