SAVE THE ANIMALS FOUNDATION
E-NEWS
Greetings!
We're busy at the shelter gearing up for our end of the year fundraising events. Being an all volunteer organization and funding ourselves through donations and fundraisers only, is incredibly rewarding but challenging at the same time. So, when we saw that the Animal Rescue Site is hosting a $100,000+ Shelter Challenge - we couldn't wait to enter and of course we're asking all of you to help us!
Shop at Bigg's in Hyde Park? Then make sure you ask for your six-cent coin to put in STAF's box! The more coins we receive the more money we raise!
Does your company have a Corporate Matching Gift Program? If so, your donation may be doubled or tripled if STAF is on their eligible organizations list.
We're also having a special fundraiser this month for Lewis. An incredibly sweet dog who has gone through quite a bit and needs our help!
As always, we love introducing you to our residents and of course Paisley and Georgia O'Keefe would love to meet you!
As always, thank you for all that you do for STAF! |

CORPORATE MATCHING GIFTS Did you know that many employers sponsor matching gift programs and will match any charitable contributions made by their employees? Your company might be one that will match your donation to STAF or, give a donation if you volunteer at STAF. Check with your company's HR or payroll department to see whether it offers such a program and if STAF is on the list of eligible organizations. If it is, request a matching gift form from your employer and send it completed and signed with your gift. We will do the rest! The impact of your gift to Wilbur and all our shelter residents may be doubled or possibly tripled! Some companies also match gifts made by retirees and/or spouses. For further information, contact Phyllis at phyllis@staf.org |
MEET LEWIS
Lewis, the beautiful Golden Retriever/Great Pyrenees mix, came to STAF in September. He was limping slightly and had difficulty breathing. But that is not what we noticed first about Lewis. He was devastatingly handsome and had a softness in his eyes that made everyone smile.
After x-rays and tests, vets concluded that Lewis has a broken pelvis (most likely due to being hit by a car) that has healed on its own and will require surgery to reset the hip so that he can put weight on his leg. As if that weren't enough, he has a bullet lodged in his neck. The shrapnel from the bullet has caused the growth of scar tissue in his nasal passage which has almost completely blocked his airway. This will also require surgery if Lewis is ever going to be able to breath properly.
For a young dog to have gone through so much pain and suffering in his short life is unimaginable. However, where Lewis' pelvis is broken, his spirit is not. He is gentle and sweet with a loving demeanor and a constantly wagging tail. He loves to sit with us, his big head on our laps, as we pet him and assure him that we will give him the life he so deserves.
This is where you can help. Lewis' surgeries will cost upward of $5,000. In an effort to raise money, we are holding the Hope for Lewis Fundraiser on Wednesday, October 22, 2008 from 6:00-9:00pm at Play By Play (6923 Plainfield Road).
A $10 donation will include drink specials, food, a Cornhole Tournament (must enter by 7:00pm), raffles, a silent auction, and more! If you are unable to attend but would like to help, please send donations to: Save The Animals Foundation Attention: Hope for Lewis Fundraiser PO Box 9356

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT - GEORGIA O'KEEFE
Marsailles Gets Bi-Paw Pal!
Many of you know the adorable gray and white girl, Marseilles, who scoots herself around on her two front paws due to an accident in kittenhood that made her back legs immobile. On Saturday, October 4, a fellow bi-paw joined our shelter ranks!
Georgia O'Keefe was found outside the Art Institute of Cincinnati and brought to STAF when the people were unsure of how to help this special needs girl. Although initially very shy, this artful kitty has settled right in at STAF by demanding copious amounts of pats and flattering us with non-stop purring! She has also realized that an adorable pouting look, her scruffy fur, and her thin frame will win her extra canned food every time.
Georgia O'Keefe does show some signs of mobility in her back legs and can support her weight on them for short amounts of time, so we are hoping her injury is not as severe as fellow bi-paw Marseilles. As always, STAF will support this girl with the best rehabilitation procedures, medicine, and love all made possible by fabulous volunteers and donors.
Interested in meeting this special girl, then stop by STAF Adoptions - Thursday, 6:00pm-8:00pm, and Saturday, 1:00pm-4:00pm. |
RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT - PAISLEY
Paisley (est. birthdate 7/06) has a super-sweet personality and we have yet to come across a dog that doesn't get along with her. Unfortunately, all her buddies keep getting adopted, and she's still here. We're convinced that Paisley is helping the other dogs be more adoptable, but for some reason we can't figure out, she keeps getting passed over.
If you're looking for a dog to be a playmate for your current dog/s ... or a dog that is playful but not hyper ... or a dog that has some rudimentary manners (sit, leash walking) but is still trainable ... you should meet Paisley. She's young, she's sweet, and she's got a beautiful personality to match her unique good looks.
Paisley has come a long, long way since arriving at our shelter a raggedy, grossly underweight stray, a little timid and unsure of the world around her, but quickly warming up to her new, safe surroundings.
As we've gotten to know Paisley better over the months, an extremely intelligent and energetic little dog has emerged. She needs a very active, preferably adults-only home that can commit to keeping her busy with both physical and mental workouts.
Like any teenager, Paisley has begun testing her limits and will benefit greatly from formal training and a consistent home. If you've owned a herding dog, you'll understand her intelligence, energy and capacity for loyalty. She can be a bit aloof on first meeting strangers, and may take a bit longer to warm up to men, but once you've earned her trust, you'll have a friend for life!
Stop by to meet Paisley during STAF Adoptions - Thursday, 6:00pm-8:00pm, and Saturday, 1:00pm-4:00pm. | |
