Spotlight on Success:
FamilyWize Prescription Discount Program Saves Our Community Over $1.5 Million in 2011 | |
The United Way of the Eastern Panhandle Inc. recently received it's annual award designating the total amount that individuals have saved on their prescrition drugs in our community, for a total of of over $1.5 million through the FamilyWize® Prescription Discount program.
What is FamilyWIze®? The FamilyWize Community Service Partnership was established in 2005 by Dan and Susan Barnes to reduce the cost of prescriptions for people who live and work in Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania. Distribution of these cards was later coordinated by the local United Way. United Ways in other communities quickly heard about the program and started asking if they could get cards for their communities. Sadly, many families in the United States need a FamilyWize card, either because they have no health insurance or they have to buy medicine that is not covered by their insurance, Medicaid or Medicare plans. Today, more than 30,000 organizations, agencies and businesses participate in the program.
How's it work?
These cards are provided free of charge both to the organizations and agencies helping to distribute the cards and to the people who receive the cards. All funding for the FamilyWize program is provided by part of the dispensing fee that is included in the cost of medicines when a FamilyWize card is used to save you money, and by in-kind donations and reduced costs from the program sponsors. |

WELFARE MYTH #3 Welfare is a lifestyle, and people stay on it for life. Federal regulations limit receipt of TANF benefits to a LIFETIME maximum of 60 months, regardless of the state where the recipient lives. This makes it impossible for families to continue receiving welfare for a lifetime. In West Virginia, when a case is closed before the 60 month limit has been reached, only about 9% of cases are re-opened. |
