SpotlightSpotlight on Success:
Warming Hands & Hearts
The Warming Hands and Hearts Fund, a United Way of the Eastern Panhandle, Inc. initiative, has partnered locally with Roach Energy and ROCS Convenience Stores to help keep the heat on for families in our communities this winter.

The goal of Warming Hands and Hearts is to ensure that every family in Berkeley, Jefferson, and Morgan counties with a legitimate need is assisted.  Unfortunately, the ability to provide assistance is limited to the dollars that are donated/granted to the Warming Hands and Hearts Fund.
Here's how it works: A Regional Resource Connection case manager in each of the three counties administers the Warming Hands and Hearts program.  Referrals are made through DHHR, and the case managers work with the client to identify all potential methods of ensuring heat.  The case managers also contact the electric, gas, or oil company on behalf of the client to negotiate minimum payment and a payment schedule. Financial management, weatherization, and conservation information are also provided through the initiative.  No administrative fees or overhead charges are taken from Warming Hands and Hearts, which means every dollar that is contributed, is used to directly provide heat for a family in crisis.

So, How Can You Help This Winter?

1. Purchase a Warming Hands and Hearts coffee tumbler at any ROCS Convenience Store for $6.99. ROCS will make a contribution for every tumbler or coffee refill purchased through April 15th.

2. Request your propane or heating oil from Roach Energy's Warming Hands and Hearts trucks. Through April 15th, Roach Energy will contribute

one cent per gallon of fuel purchased.

3. Make a contribution - Any size, large or small! Through our partnership with Roach Energy and ROCS Convenience Stores, BP America will match donations dollar for dollar, up to $6500.

ChampionBecky Linton Honored as
Champion of Change
Rebecca (Becky) Linton was selected by the White House to be highlighted as a 'Champion of Change', which is part of President Obama's Winning the Future initiative (www.whitehouse.gov/champions.)

When asked to nominate a person who has made a significant impact in the Panhandle during the holidays, Jan Callen, President and CEO of United Way of the Eastern Panhandle, said his answer was immediate: Becky Linton and the Christmas Cash for Kids Program.

Her nomination reads; Becky Linton has been the driving force in founding this community's "Christmas Cash For Kids" (CCFK) program which is designed to take care of those kids who fall through the cracks each Christmas. Over the past five Christmas seasons she has ensured that over 2000 children have had a Christmas by chairing planning meetings that start in July, organizing fundraising efforts among her fellow business leaders, shopping for the toys and clothing and packaging the presents; Becky does it all. Those in need, whether they are organizations or individuals, find a listening heart with this local banker. While some executives and managers find themselves too busy to be bothered with anything other than their business, Becky realizes that caring is part of her business and has been recognized in our community as a "Woman of Distinction."

You can honor a special person while supporting the work of United Way of the Eastern Panhandle, Inc.

Gift-giving is the time-honored way in which our culture has chosen to acknowledge holidays, special events such as birthdays and weddings, and the simple passing of time. Whether as a holiday gift to one who already "has everything", recognition of a birthday or anniversary of someone dear to us, or simply as a way to say "thank you for just being you", your contribution to United Way of the Eastern Panhandle, Inc. in the name of another can add depth and quality unequaled by most other gifts.

It's the perfect opportunity to honor a special person or make a memorial donation while helping to make a difference in the lives of families, children and individuals in need throughout the Eastern Panhandle.
