Spotlight on Success: The Bethany House
| The Bethany House is an emergency shelter for up to 32 women and children. It is run by Community Networks Inc. (CNI), a private, nonprofit organization serving Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan counties. CNI provides an emergency safety net through a wide range of assistance, including transitional housing for women and children and emergency financial assistance.
"Belinda" was a resident of the Bethany House for a six month time period. During her stay there, she began participating in Life Skills classes. Just three weeks into the class, she received an opportunity to participate in Goodwill Industries employment training program. While she could no longer participate in Life Skills classes, she was gainfully employed through the program. "Belinda's" employment through Goodwill allowed her to take her next step toward self-sufficiency. She was able to move into the HOPE Living/Learning Center transitional housing program. "Belinda" completed her employment training program and began to search for other gainful employment. She successfully entered the workforce in a position in the home health care field. |

Thunder Over the Blue Ridge Air Show Breaks Even
| The Thunder Over the Blue Ridge Board of Directors reported at a press conference on Tuesday, November 1 that the air show will meet all its obligations. All non-profit groups, vendors and performers at this year's show have been compensated for their time and commitment, including non-profit organizations that ran food and beverage booths. Many of these groups depend on the show for a significant part of their annual fundraising budget. Their compensation is based on concession sales, which were obviously cut short. United Way of the Eastern Panhandle is using the donations made at the gates by air show spectators to cover the financial commitment to these organizations.
Because nearly all of the gate donations were expended to cover this cost, the 2011 United Way campaign has been left with a significant shortfall of $50,000 in air show donations.
These are dollars that would have been invested in programs that address the basic needs, education, income and health needs for our community. This reduction will make a significant impact on a wide variety of services and means fewer hot meals for those in need, fewer coats for children, less assistance to help with winter energy bills, and fewer children will be served in early child care and after school programs.
While there is no single solution to this problem, the Thunder and United Way Boards are hopeful that our community will recognize the need and step forward to help fill the gap. If you are a current United Way donor, consider increasing your contribution. If you are not a current donor please make a commitment now. You can do this online at www.uwayep.org or by calling United Way at 304-263-0603. Any amount, large or small will make a difference and be greatly appreciated. By once again showing our community pride, we can meet this challenge together and build a stronger community. |
