Photo Tributes to the CGS Family
Edited by Lorna Wallace
This month we honor Josefa Babilonia Lopez, step-grandmother of California Genealogical Society board member Ellen Fernandez-Sacco.
| Josefa Babilonia Lopez (1893-1963) and Maria del Rosario Ines 'Sarito' Babilonia Estrella (1888-1978)
|
This photo postcard of my my step-grandmother and great aunt, Josefa Babilonia Lopez, dates from 1905 and was probably taken in Barrio Pueblo, Quebradillas, Puerto Rico. Josefa is dressed in black and is shown with her cousin, Maria del Rosario Ines 'Sarito' Babilonia Estrella, in the white dress. Josefa was the daughter of Alicides Ambrosio Talavera (1860-1921) and his wife Maria de la Concepcion Lopez Ramirez (1863-1925), the seventh of eleven children. She died 17 Oct 1963, at the age of 70, of complications from lung and heart problems.
Josefa had a terrible temper, and believed kindness was a weakness. She had a son, and then three daughters and two stepsons with Jose 'Cheo' Lopez Hernandez, a municipal housepainter in Moca. Josefa also took in my mother after the death of her mother, Felicita Rodriguez Vale, in 1941, and then her father (who was Josefa's brother), Felix Alicides Babilonia Lopez, in 1948.
I photographed this image in 2007 during a visit to Puerto Rico where I met family members and collected genealogical data, family stories and images for a book I hope to finish this year. The postcard is from the collection of my cousin, Gaspar Matias Babilonia.
-Ellen Fernandez-Sacco
