Valmah Sherman WHITE, my father's older brother, was born 16 Jun 1894 in Elkader, Boardman Township, Clayton County, Iowa. He enlisted in the French army Réserve Malle, in 1916, as a volunteer ambulance driver. As far as I know this event was never mentioned throughout my entire childhood.

Just last year the widow of his son made many snapshots, studio photos of my uncle, and other related material available to me. This tiny print was among them. He is on the far left, placing a call in the donkey's ear to his buddy at the tail!

He was able to return from Europe, marry, and establish a law practice in a small town near Elkader. During the 1930s, he also served in elected offices in Chickasaw County, Iowa. He died in 1945.
