Photo Tributes to the CGS Family

Edited by Lorna Wallace

This month, we pay tribute to an ancestor of Laura Obergfell, Dr. Josiah Andrus Gridley.

Josiah Gridley Family

Using dates when tintypes were common and another photo of him, I have identified in this unlabeled photograph my ancestor, Josiah Andrus GRIDLEY, b. 1802, who lived a long life in Southampton, Massachusetts. I believe it dates from about 1870 and includes his third wife, Myra and their young daughter, Eva. I descend from a previous wife - Fidelia Searle - daughter of Gaius Searle and Electa Day, who was born 22 July 1803 in Massachusetts and died 24 Aug 1853.

Josiah was a successful physician who was known to be a profoundly religious man, stating in a family letter that he had no faith in ministers as "their lights have gone dim." I believe him to be the Josiah A. Gridley who published Astounding Facts from the Spirit World, Witnessed at the House of J.A. Gridley, Southampton, Mass., by a Circle of Friends, Embracing the Extremes of Good and Evil, printed 1854.

I have yet to find proof of his date of death, though some people list it as 1900 (at age 98). Myra may have married again before 1880. I have lots of research yet to do! Perhaps someone will be able to provide more information about Josiah.

- Laura Obergfell

Call For Submissions  - Are you member with a great family photo to share? If you would like to pay tribute to your ancestor in a future edition of the eNews, please email Lorna Wallace and send your image with a brief narrative.
