California Ancestors: Homesteaders
| Photo Tributes to the CGS Family Edited by Lorna Wallace
This month, we pay tribute to the family of Martin Enos DAVIS, who homesteaded in North Dakota. Photo and story shared by Ron Davis.

Martin Enos Davis (1882 - 1955), youngest child of Floyd Miller Davis and Rachel Ann Lushbaugh, married Julia Lucinda Newcomer (1882 - 1962), daughter of Zachariah Taylor Newcomer and Mary Louisa Webster, on August 24, 1899 in Princeton, Missouri. For a time the couple resided in Decatur County, Iowa where six of their eight children were born.
Martin and Julia Davis homesteaded near Amidon, North Dakota. The babe in arms in the photograph is daughter Wilma who was born there in January 1910. The family went back to Iowa for several years before returning to North Dakota where they farmed and reared their family on 360 acres, one mile west of Amidon. Four sons relocated to Northern California during the 1930s but Martin and Julia remained in North Dakota the rest of their lives. Both are buried at Lebanon Lutheran Cemetery near Amidon.
