Using Land Records in Genealogy
Join
CGS member Pam Miller for this practical overview of land and property
records and learn why they are absolutely necessary to your family
history research. Discover how this often overlooked record set can
help you solve lineage problems, accurately identify ancestors,
correct faulty information and enrich the story of more distant
ancestors.
The workshop is FREE for CGS members but is limited to fifteen people. (There are only a couple of spaces left. If we get more requests, we will start a waiting list for a future workshop.)
There is a sign-up fee of $10 for non-members. (This fee can be applied toward membership on the day of the workshop.) Reservations are required; download the registration flier. Questions? E-mail or call CGS at 510-663-1358. Learn more at the CGSL blog.

Photo Tributes to the CGS Family Edited by Cathy H. Paris
This month's photographs and story were submitted by Judy Zelver.

These old photos are of a stage line in Westchester County, New York,
owned and operated by my great-grandfather Charles Johnson (1868-1952)
of Armonk, New York. The coach line served the Armonk-Kensico villages,
and later the Armonk-Valhalla route. The Kensico village and the
surrounding valley were flooded in the early 1900s in order to create a
large reservoir to supply water for New York City which is about
twenty-five miles south of this area. The southern part of the
reservoir and the dam are located in Valhalla. The project was completed
circa 1915.
The picture of the horse-driven coach was probably
taken in the late 1800s, and the driver is believed to be my
great-grandfather. This coach served the Kensico-Armonk route. These
villages were only a few miles apart. The picture of the motor coach
probably was taken in the early 1900s. This coach served the
Armonk-Valhalla area. The driver in the motor coach is my grandfather,
Frank Johnson (1891-1973), the oldest son of Charles Johnson. The
passengers are Frank's four brothers and a friend.
My great
grandfather, Charles Johnson (1868-1952) was born in Armonk, New York,
as were all his children, several of his grandchildren, and a few of
his great-grandchildren. His paternal ancestors, going back to James
Johnson in the early 1800s, were from Armonk. Other family lines
resided in Armonk as far back as the mid-1700s. Before operating the
coach line, Charles was a shoemaker. He married Phebe Conklin Kipp
(1869-1959). Phebe's ancestors first settled in New Amsterdam in the
late 1600s. Her Kipp ancestors migrated from New Amsterdam to Long
Island and then north to Chappaqua, New York in the mid-1700s. Although
they were Quakers, some family members participated in the
Revolutionary War. Many descendants of the Kipps are still living in
the area.
