Celebrating 110 Years of Helping People to Find Their Roots |
The California Genealogical Society and Library has reached another significant milestone.
The society was established in San Francisco on
February 12, 1898, by founders who were interested in family history and
in the preservation of genealogical materials. They sought to share their
books and keep company with like-minded individuals, and the tradition continues.

Coffees Coming to San Francisco, Sacramento and Southern California
The next California Genealogical Society Membership Coffee will be held on Wednesday, April 2, 2008, 10 a.m. - 12 noon, at the Mechanics' Institute Library
cafe in San Francisco's Financial District. Members who live in San
Francisco will be receiving personal invitations by phone or email and will be encouraged to bring a friend who is interested in genealogy. Immediately following the coffee, at noon, the regularly scheduled public tour of the Mechanics' Institute Library takes place. The Institute is private and only members are
allowed inside the library, so this will be a unique opportunity to tour this historic
facility. Reservations will be required since space is limited. |
Plans are also underway for a membership coffee at the Belle Cooledge Branch Library in Sacramento on Wednesday, May 7, 2008 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Members in the greater Sacramento area will be receiving their invitations in the coming weeks.
CGS President Jane Lindsey is looking for a member who lives in the Los Angeles area to help organize a membership coffee to coincide with the Southern California Genealogical Society Jamboree 2008, which will be held June 27-29 at the Burbank Airport Marriott Hotel and Convention Center.

Photo Tributes to the CGS Family |
In honor of our special 110th anniversary event with the Photo Detective, CGS eNews presents a new feature, suggested by member Carolyn Steinberg, who wrote: "Even though they are not my family, I always find
old pictures interesting."
This month's CGS Ancestor was submitted by Lois Elling, production editor of the CGS Newsletter:
This is "Cousin Ida," surname unknown. The photograph was printed as a postcard and mailed to my grandmother's sister, Ella, in Boston, Massachusettes in 1912. Although Ida isn't one of my direct ancestors, she's very important because she had come to America from Sweden, then returned. When she came back to America, my grandmother, Caroline PERRSON came with her. I love this photo for several reasons.
It's the only one I have of her, she's very smartly dressed, and is
posed with a bicycle. Quite progressive for 1912!
If you would like to see your CGS Ancestor featured in a future edition of the CGS eNews, please email your image to CGSpublicity@gmail.com and include a brief description.
