Message From the President
by Jane Lindsey

Our library is really looking great, thanks to many volunteer hours.

Plans are in the works for a great Family History Month in October.

Check out the Volunteers Needed section below. There are many opportunities waiting for volunteers to step up. You can choose from the Online Catalog Project, Library Aides, Computer Techies, Desk Duty or the Coffee Committee.

Speakers needed. Do you know of a speaker or do you have a presentation that would appeal to our members? Please contact me with suggestions.

Special Announcements

ALLEN County Research trip AUGUST 19-26 Commitments needed by June 15th to guarantee we will have the trip (a minimum of 15 participants is needed).  The flier is on our website, in our last newsletter and at the library.  For information on the FGS conference (Aug. 15-18) which precedes our time at the Allen County Public Library, please go to http://www.fgs.org/. For other questions, please contact Jane Lindsey.

Allen County library can be accessed at http://www.acpl.lib.in.us/ where you may check what is available. Not only does the library have all PERSI sources, but also significant material on many other states and a wonderful city directory collection.

BOOK ACQUISITION PROJECT

To assist our Library Committee, we would like members to review our collection of books and identify books we could add to our collection.  We are especially looking for additional California resources. You can help in the following ways:  if you know of a book that would be of value, tell us where the book can be purchased and the cost by sending an email to CGS at calgen1898@calgensoc.org). Or when you are in the library and notice a book you feel could be valuable, let us know. The committee will evaluate the suggestion.

Ancestry.com no longer available at Family History Centers

As of April 1, 2007 the Family History centers and the Family History Library in Salt lake will no longer carry the full version of Ancestry.com  There are substitutes for some sites and there may be some changes in the future. Until then the Ancestry Library Edition is available at CGS and some public libraries. The full edition is only available by personal subscription.

Volunteers Needed

ONLINE CATALOG PROJECT
Volunteers who understand Library of Congress call numbers are needed to pull cards for our non-digitized catalog records so they can be sent of to be digitized. The job involves checking our shelflist, in call number order, against a printout of our online records, also in call number order. It can be done solo or in groups. We'd like to get this done by early summer. Send an email to calgen1898@calgensoc.org

LIBRARIANS AND LIBRARY AIDES
We need experienced people for the "back office" to help with book selection and purchasing, copy cataloging, original cataloging prep, etc. We also need people - not necessarily librarians - for a "front office" committee. Their role will be to make the collection more accessible and the library as a whole more user-friendly. If you've had library experience or are very comfortable in libraries, please let us know. Send an email to calgen1898@calgensoc.org

COMPUTER TECHIES NEEDED
Computers are wonderful but there are also challenges to maintain them. We are looking for members who have good technical savvy to help us develop a larger Computer Committee.  Send an email to calgen1898@calgensoc.org  or call for more info.

DESK DUTY
A desk duty volunteer is needed for one day a month in which the library is open. If you like people and want to help on the desk, let our Desk Duty Captain, Marston Watson, know of your interest.

MEMBER COFFEE CHAIRMAN/COMMITTEE
CGS is looking for a few members to plan casual meetings in areas around the bay to have an opportunity to meet members and so members can meet other researchers in their area.  This would entail making some phone calls to find a place to have a coffee and then arranging a few members to help as hosts.

Websites of Interest

If you discover a valuable website,  please send it on to CGS.  We will publish it here for all to see.

When researching, do not forget to look at state archives.  Many states are adding searchable databases to their sites.

http://www.calgensoc.org/   Try our new CGS online card catalog (still in beta version) from the CGS website. The "advanced search" button on the left will allow you to do a key word search. We have only half of our collection on line but most California books are catalogued. Another access route is http://hosted.surpassoftware.com/calgensoc/.

http://www.oldcolonyancestors.com/home.html  Southeastern Massachusetts families.

http://www.capecodhistory.us     There is a wealth of information about Cape Cod area and also Maine    There are a lot of genealogies especially for Wellfleet families.  To get to genealogies add /genealogy after the .us.

http://www.mdch.state.mi.us/gendisx/index.htm  Michigan death index 1867-1884.

http://stephenmorse.org/  a great site for assisting with searches for passenger and immigrant records. Also look at other options: the birthday site helps you to find living descendants.
