Why Can't We Wear White
After Labor Day? Labor Day, celebrated in the U.S. on the first Monday of September, marks the traditional, nonofficial end of summer. We are all aware of the wardrobe etiquette: NO white clothing or accessories after Labor Day. So why aren't we supposed to wear white after Labor Day?
The practical reason: wearing white in the summer was simply a way to stay cool. Historians speculate the origin of the no white after Labor Day rule may be symbolic. In the early 20th century, white was the uniform of choice for Americans well-to-do enough to vacation away from their city lives for months at a time. Light summer clothing provided a pleasing contrast to their drabber-colored urban lives. Come September they would return from their summer homes to urban life and abandon their summer white.
The no white after Labor Day rule has always met with resistance from the high-fashion world. As far back as the 1920s, Coco Chanel made white a year-round staple; it was a permanent part of her wardrobe. I always admired Coco as a business woman and a trend-setter! I have never been one to be too concerned with those fashion rules that don't make much practical sense; the no white after Labor Day rule is one of them. I prefer to look at white from this standpoint: do you like white and does white look good on you.
There are many hues of white. Off-white (a shade of white), cream (yellow or brown added), ice white (blue added), etc. The goal is to find the white that compliments your skin tone, hair color, and eyes. How does one do that? Having your color analysis done by a professional is my first choice. If that is not an option, take a variety of white fabrics and put them next to your face one at a time in "clear" light (the outdoors generally provides good lighting). Look at yourself in a mirror as you run the fabric by your face to see which one looks best on you. Which one makes your eyes sparkle, your skin glow and skin appear smoother, and make dark under-eye circles and fine facial lines diminish? That is the white for you.
What about white shoes? I am not a fan of bright white shoes. Why? Because white attracts attention, the eye is drawn to white. White shoes means the eye will be drawn to your feet; not good. We want the attention to be on our face, not our feet.
What about white slacks? Most people are not happy with the size of their buttocks. White makes things look bigger and draws attention, need I say more. However, if you are a V body type white slacks may work for you to create balance in the upper and lower body.
What Does White Say? White implies pure, clean, and crisp; it is the color one notices first even though it is not a color at all. White looks cool in the summer and can make a dramatic statement in the winter.
The final conclusion; if you like white and feel it looks good on you, you have my permission to break the old rule and wear white long after Labor Day has passed.
