| Job Search Score Card* |
 |
|
*Although the focus of this article is for Job-
seakers
the principals will also apply to prospecting clients or
customers.
Do you have goals and "keep
score" during your job
search? You should!
Keeping a
written
account
of
your progress will help you stay on track and keep you
motivated. The job search process is not easy for
anyone. It is sometimes depressing and difficult to
stay motivated after a few rejections. I feel your pain,
having been unemployed a few times myself. I am
excited to share with you what has helped me stay on
track.
Below are a few questions to help you keep score.
Write down a projected goal and actual results for
each question. Keep a daily, weekly and monthly
tally. The secret is to write down your goals, record
your progress, and then review the report daily. I
guarantee this will bring you positive results in your
job search.
How many people did I tell about the job I am
looking
for?
"The squeaky wheel gets the grease". If you don't tell
everyone what type of work you are looking for they
cannot help you with your search. Make it easy by
being as specific and clear as possible in your
description of what you are looking for. Others may
not understand your field of work is so keep your
description simple and in general terms.
PROJECTED GOAL _______
ACTUAL RESULTS _______
How many resumes have I sent out?
It's a numbers game. The more you send out the
greater your chances of getting a positive return. Be
sure your resume is targeted to the company you are
sending it to. Sending blanket email resumes is not
effective.
PROJECTED GOAL _______
ACTUAL RESULTS _______
Have I updated my resume for people who
already
have it?
Did you take a class, publish an
article, attend a
conference, update a certification; let your prospective
employer know. This will "touch" them again and
keep your resume on the top of the pile. Be sure the
update is relevant to the prospective employer.
PROJECTED GOAL _______
ACTUAL RESULTS _______
Did I follow-up within 5 days by calling or sending
the information promised?
If you don't plan to follow-up, don't bother sending the
information. Keeping in contact is critical. A simple
phone call to ask if they received the information and if
there are questions will let the prospective employer
know your are serious about employment with them.
PROJECTED GOAL _______
ACTUAL RESULTS _______
What can I do to get closer to my career goal?
Volunteer, take a temporary
assignment, do
an
internship, talk to or interview people in the field;
anything you do to keep you in touch with your career
choice will help. The connection will also let you
know if you would like to work in that field or for that
specific company. You never know until you are on
the "inside" what is really going on.
PROJECTED GOAL _______
ACTUAL RESULTS _______
Do I attend events pertaining to my career?
Did I meet and talk with the hosts,
speakers,
etc. of
the events? Did I make myself visible to the entire
group by making an announcement, exhibiting, serve
as a greeter or facilitator, take part in programs,
volunteer, and ask questions? Exposure without
being overbearing is critical.
PROJECTED GOAL _______
ACTUAL RESULTS _______
Did I dress appropriately?
Your first
impression is so important. Know what is
expected for appropriate dress in your field and
always dress at that level or above. When in doubt
ask someone you trust in the field. Call me; I can give
you a general guideline to stay within. Watch for our
next newsletter, we will expand on the professional
image.
PROJECTED GOAL _______
ACTUAL RESULTS _______
How many business cards did I collect? Did I
note
significant information on the card?
Collect
business cards, write down pertinent
information on the card, then contact them within 3 to
5 days of the event. Don't expect the connections you
make to call you.
PROJECTED GOAL _______
ACTUAL RESULTS _______
What kind of research, study, and training have I
done
recently to increase my value?
You can't
expect a new job to land in your lap. You
have to aggressively pursue it. Education, training,
and keeping up to date in your field are absolutely
necessary.
PROJECTED GOAL _______
ACTUAL RESULTS _______
Do I have a positive professional presence on the
on-
line social networking sites?
This is a
relatively new addition to the job search
world. We are all "putting ourselves out there" on
Linkedin, My Space, Facebook, You Tube, and more.
Google your name, you can be sure prospective
employers are. What comes up? These new social
networking sites are a fantastic place to connect, be
sure you are developing a positive impression you
would be proud to show everyone.
