Big Tent Christianity (BTX) is the convergence of new and old ways of being and b
ecoming the Church:
Progressive and Emergent
Denominational and Non-denominational
Large and Small Faith Communities
Describable and Indescribable

BTX brings people together from across the country to proclaim what unites us as followers of Jesus in this modern world.  More than a dozen leading Christian voices will break through boundaries to share new and innovative forms of ministry and renewal. You will be inspired by their visions of how we can speak even more powerfully in and to the world of the 21st century.

The gathering will include presentations, responses and discussion with speakers and with each other.   There will be a Big Tent of music with creative versions of traditional music along with contemporary music--myriad ways that reflect our common ground.

The keynote speaker for each block of time will be:

Thursday Morning:  Carol Howard Merritt

Thursday Afternoon:  Brian McLaren

Thursday Evening:  Marcus Borg

Friday Morning:  Richard Rohr
Friday Afternoon: Shane Hipps

Each block will have responses from 4 other speakers and time for audience Q&A. Each will also have a time for music and/or creative ideas for gatherings. This will be followed by break-out groups with the speakers in this block.   More schedule details in next email!

Northeast Valley Forum
Jesus and the Language of the Kingdom
with Rev. Vernon Meyer, PhD

In the spirit of Marcus Borg who challenges us to peel back the layers of Christian tradition in order to discover the Reign of God in the teachings of Jesus, this series of lectures will look at the ways Christian tradition over the centuries has transformed the teachings of Jesus into dogmatic teachings and how we can begin to peel back the layers of that tradition in an effort to discover the "real" Jesus of Christianity.

Rev. Vernon Meyer, PhD., a former Catholic priest and current United Church of Christ minister, is  Director of the Arizona Center for Theological Studies.

The Great Speeches:
Matthew's Jesus and The Sermon on the Mount

with Rev. Vernon Meyer, Ph.D.

Matthew writes to a Jewish Christian community that is being challenged by the new vision of the teachings of Jesus and the Reign of God, and they are being challenged by their desire to hold on to the traditions of Jewish faith.

No stranger to controversy, Dr. Meyer is the ideal guide through some of the Biblical material that is at the heart of the New Reformation in Christianity, leaving old dogma behind and embracing the heart of Jesus' message.  The Sermon on the Mount was the transition point between the old and the new for the first disciples: while Jesus is portrayed as the new Moses, his teachings go beyond the conventional traditions and rituals of the day to envision a new Israel.

Classes are free, but donations will be accepted.
