Some traditional Valentine's Day gift and celebration ideas
should come with a -WARNING- for furry companions. Chocolate, a popular gift around this time of year, can be dangerous to pets. A ten-pound dog can suffer vomiting and/or diarrhea,
hyperactivity, seizures, and an abnormally elevated heart rate from just
two ounces of baking chocolate or 20 ounces of milk chocolate,
according to the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center.
Many a curious pet has explored an alcoholic beverage left in a
glass, but if ingested, alcohol could cause vomiting, diarrhea, a lack
of coordination, central nervous system depression, tremors, difficulty
breathing, metabolic disturbances and coma in dogs. It can even cause
death from respiratory failure if a large enough amount is ingested.
Another potential hazard is gum or candy sweetened with the sugar
substitute xylitol, which can cause a fairly sudden drop in blood sugar,
known as hypoglycemia. This can result in depression, loss of
coordination, and seizures, according to the poison control center.
Many varieties of lilies are highly toxic to cats, so if these are
your Valentine's flower of choice, make sure your cats can't get near
them. Other potentially poisonous flowers may include tulips, daisies,
chrysanthemums and baby's breath. Safer alternatives include African
violets, asters, jasmine and orchids.
Last but not least. Candlelit dinners can be romantic, but don't leave the room while the
flames are still burning. Curious or playful pets can turn an unattended candle into disaster. |

Share the LOVE not the food!
There are healthier ways to spoil your pet and
show your love without helping them pack on the pounds.
Here
are some suggestions:
Make them work for it. Interactive
toys keep pets busy while rewarding them with small treats throughout
the play activity. For already obese pets, using pieces of their regular food as treats is helpful.
Forget the treats
and get moving. Increasing play time with your pet can
greatly increase calories burned in a day. Spoiling your pet doesn't
have to involve food. Playing ball with dogs or feather on a string with cats, going for a walk or run or visiting a
dog park are fun and healthful ways to interact with your pet.
Brush
them. Most pets love to be brushed. It makes them feel better to get
all that loose hair off and lets them know they're loved!
Choose healthier treats.
Fresh baby carrots are a great, low-calorie alternative to fatty
biscuits and permit the frequent treat-giving that many pets have become
accustomed to. (Scroll down for easy low-cal dog and cat treat recipes) _____________________________________

MEET YOUR STAFF
A monthly column featuring our GREAT team members
Debbie
Abbey's is proud to work with awesome pet care providers and Debbie is no exception. Although she is a native Hoosier, 30 years in Texas has taught her to say "ya'll" and "fixin" with the best of them!
Dogs, cats, birds, lizards, fish - she loves them all, as
well as her two grown daughters and two granddaughters (oh, and a
husband, too).
Her first pet was a parakeet named Chester and her
most-loved was her poodle Pepper, a rescue who lived to be 20 years old.
Currently, she has two cats and two dogs (all rescues) who keep her
entertained.
In her spare time, Deb enjoys
reading, knitting, music, the
outdoors, and spending time with friends and family.
Debbie has a bachelor's degree and a master's degree
in business, although growing up she always dreamed of being a
veterinarian. Working with Abbey's and caring for lots of wonderful
pets allows her to fulfill that passion!
