Stay-at-home Dogs can ensure that your belongings stay home as well!
Unfortunately, police say, home burglaries
are on the increase. One line of defense that all law enforcement professionals
agree on is the presence of a dog.
Whether your dog's a lover or a fighter, a lightweight or a heavyweight, chances are they're a BARKER
when it comes to strangers and unfamiliar noises.
While there are no guarantees, allowing your dog to stay home while you're
out of town certainly makes the house less desirable for the random thief who
considers time, lighting and noise when "casing" a house.
Make it time-consuming to break into your
home by:
|
|
- Installing deadbolt locks on all exterior
doors
|
|
|
- Installing double key locks in doors which
contain glass. This will keep a burglar from being able to simply break the
glass and reach through. (Note: so that everyone in the house can get
out in the event of a fire, be sure to keep the key in designated
place).
|
|
|
- Placing additional locks on all windows and
patio doors
|
Make lighting a problem for a burglar by:
|
|
- Ensuring that exterior lights are mounted out
of reach, so that burglars can't easily unscrew bulbs
|
|
|
- Using motion-sensitive lights
|
|
|
- Using a variable light timer to activate
lights inside your home
|
|
|
- Trimming trees and shrubs near doors and
windows so burglars can't hide in the shadows
Make noise a problem for a
burglar by:
- Installing or
utilizing an alarm system with posted warning signs
- Allowing your
dog to stay home even while you travel
|
Remember that Abbey's Pet and House Sitting™

PLEASE NOTE:
At Abbey's Pet and House Sitting™ and Midday
Mutts™, it has always been our policy
NOT to advertise on our pet care provider's vehicles. We take the privacy and home security of our
clients very seriously and to keep from alerting thieves to your absence, we DO
NOT utilize that particular mobile marketing opportunity.

EXCERPTS FROM A CAT'S DIARY
DAY 752 - My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling
objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while I am forced to eat dry
cereal. The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of escape, and
the mild satisfaction I get from ruining the occasional piece of
furniture. Tomorrow I may eat another houseplant.
DAY 761 - Today my attempt to kill my captors by weaving around their
feet while they were walking almost succeeded, must try this at the top
of the stairs. In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile
oppressors, I once again induced myself to vomit on their favorite
chair ... must try this on their bed.
DAY 765 - Decapitated a mouse and brought them the headless body, in
attempt to make them aware of what I am capable of, and to try to
strike fear into their hearts. They only cooed and condescended about
what a good little cat I was...Hmmm. Not working according to plan.
DAY 768 - I am finally aware of how sadistic they are. For no good
reason I was chosen for the water torture. This time however it
included a burning foamy chemical called "shampoo." What sick minds
could invent such a liquid. My only consolation is the piece of thumb
still stuck between my teeth.
DAY 771 - There was some sort of gathering of their accomplices. I was
placed in solitary throughout the event. However, I could hear the
noise and smell the foul odor of the glass tubes they call "beer". More
importantly I overheard that my confinement was due to MY power of
"allergies." Must learn what this is and how to use it to my advantage.
DAY 774 - I am convinced the other captives are flunkies and maybe
snitches. The dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to
return. He is obviously a half-wit. The bird on the other hand has got
to be an informant, and speaks with them regularly. I am certain he
reports my every move. Due to his current placement in the metal room
his safety is assured. But I can wait, it is only a matter of time...

MEET YOUR STAFF
A monthly column featuring our GREAT team members
Deborah
Another one of Abbey's fabulous pet care providers, Deborah
was born in New York and lived in four states and Puerto Rico before
she was 15. An Army brat forever, she loved the military life, but
making, and then leaving friends behind every three years was the
downside of being an officer's daughter. One constant however, were the pets that moved with them to every new duty
station.
A graduate of Oklahoma State University, Deborah worked for 32 years as a federal investigator, all the while sharing her moves and her heart with a menagerie of animals including horses, ferrets, rabbits, dogs and cats.
Deborah's
passion for animals is exceeded only by her passion for the elderly and
she combines the two as a pet therapy volunteer at a Hurst nursing home
and hospice.
A resident of Colleyville since 2001, Deborah and her
husband, Rob, share their home with three rescued dogs and a clowder of
rescued cats. |
