Is loving your pet with treats making them obese?
It is estimated that 40% of dogs and cats are obese in the U.S. Unfortunately, the unhealthy effects of obesity are similar for people and pets. Excess weight can lead to an increased risk for diseases like diabetes; complicate problems like arthritis; and is linked to certain types of cancer - not to mention causing your pet discomfort.
Why are so many pets spoiled into obesity? Many people barely have enough time for themselves, let alone their pets. This means quality time with pets can be infrequent. With little time to show your pet how much you love them, special treats become a means of compensation and pampering.
There are healthier ways to spoil you pet and show your love without helping them pack on the pounds.
Here are some suggestions:
Make them work for it. Interactive toys keep pets busy while rewarding them with small treats throughout the play activity. For already obese pets, using pieces of their regular dog food as treats is helpful.
Forget the treats and get moving. Increasing play time with your pet can greatly increase calories burned in a day. Spoiling your pet doesn't have to involve food. Playing ball, going for a walk or run or visiting a dog park are fun and healthful ways to interact with your pet.
Brush them. Most pets love to be brushed. It makes them feel better to get all that loose hair off and lets them know they're loved!
Choose healthier treats. Fresh baby carrots are a great, low-calorie alternative to fatty biscuits and permit the frequent treat-giving that many dogs have become accustomed to. (Also, try out our low cal treat recipes!)

MEET YOUR STAFF
A monthly column featuring our GREAT team members
Meet Sharon, another one of Abbey's fantastic pet care providers. A Fort Worth native who now lives in Arlington, Sharon has spent much of her life providing loving care to humans as well pets. Sharon felt an early calling to serve others as a nurse. After contemplating serving as a medical missionary in Africa, Sharon determined that her mission was actually right here in Fort Worth. In 2007, Sharon retired from nursing after 40 years with John Peter Smith Hospital.
In her spare time, Sharon enjoys music and the performing arts. She is a member of the resident chorus for the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, loves local theatre and volunteers at Bass Hall with the Children's Education Program and serving as an usher.
Sharon has always loved animals, especially dogs and cats, and finds her own pets to be great companions. A caretaker by nature, Sharon very much enjoys caring for your pets as though they were her own. |
