Student Spotlight

Jenny Buechner

Jenny B"I have been practicing yoga on and off for about 10 years attending a formal class maybe once a week. My mornings always began, and still do, with a few asanas. When I did practice I always felt better, but it was not a priority in my life. Then last year I took some of Karen Erstad's classes through the UW Health Wellness program, and felt fantastic. Through her encouragement I decided to give Inner Fire a trial run. Little did I realize that this decision would change my life! After my first class there was not a doubt in my mind that purchasing a membership would be one of the best investments I would ever make.

Establishing a regular yoga practice over the past few months has helped me greatly both physically and mentally. Physically, I have more energy and things seem to ache less, especially after sitting at a desk all day. And I have never slept better in my life! Although the physical benefits are amazing, the most profound change is in my mind. Once I step on my mat the rest of the world disappears. The stresses in my life fall to the back of my head because during class nothing I do will change them. This was challenging to do initially, especially since I have a difficult time sitting still. But, I simply focus on being present with my breath and let any thoughts pass. After every class I ALWAYS have a smile on my face, and feel lighter and more alive than I had before entering the studio. I truly believe that everyone can do yoga, but it may take time to find the right fit. I feel lucky to have found the right fit in classes at Inner Fire. If everyone practiced some yoga each day, I think the world would be a lot happier and healthier place!"

Tina Morschauser - Rejuvenation Spa

Tina M"I started doing yoga about six and a half years ago with Inner Fire to help with my low back pain. Working as a hairdresser for over 22 years, I had debilitating sciatica and was being treated with acupuncture, chiropractic, and massage therapies. At first it was intimidating not knowing what any of the poses were, as well as being so limited in some of the poses; but the instructors were great in showing me how to adapt to the poses with straps and blocks. As I continued my practice, it was comforting to hear from some of the instructors that some people would never be able to complete some poses just because of the way their bodies were made. I continue my practice because of the way it has given me pain relief, along with the added benefit of helping ease my anxiety. I am a much better person on the days I do yoga. I am able to stay in the present moment longer and truly be with the people in my life. When I did the yoga challenge, I realized that I was a much better boss during staff reviews with my team members. Having 35 employees that are 99 percent women between the ages of 18 to 30 can be emotionally challenging. My business partner and manager supported me wholly during the challenge, encouraging me to go when I didn't want to, and comforted me, letting me know that everything at the spa was under control. Yoga has become such a part of my life that I have invited my closest friends to a yoga class, including my nieces and team members. At Rejuvenation Spa we host team building retreats a few times a year. One of these retreats was a personalized yoga class for our team. Another team building event that we incorporated was a meditation class at Inner Fire. Our team loved both classes, and a few of our team members are now students at Inner Fire!

Yoga has become such a part of my life that I choose my vacation based on available yoga retreats! The more I travel to other yoga retreats, and attend yoga conferences to experience other teachers, the more I appreciate the talented group of teachers Inner Fire has to offer. Somehow, they each instinctively know what to say during class that I needed to hear that day. I love walking out of class with a clear head and a clear heart to be present for the rest of my day. This past year I lost both of my parents to cancer, and it was yoga that helped me work through the loss and the grief. Even my dying mother told me to take a yoga class her last week as I was at her bedside daily. The interesting thing was that during the hardest times of my parents' deaths, I was not able to do camel pose, but now after the grief, I can do camel with an open heart. Yoga has offered me many benefits throughout these past seven years, and I hope to continue my practice for the next 40 years. I am eternally appreciative of Marit and all of the teachers. You touch your student's hearts more than you know! Thank you!"

Yoga Baby
Owen Philip (August 2011)

OwenBorn to Inner Fire Yoga student Theresa Brown

"I consider myself very lucky to be a part of the welcoming and positive community at Inner Fire Yoga. I was able to enjoy yoga throughout my pregnancy and let me tell you, if you want to get to know the people you practice with, take a power flow class at nine months pregnant and everyone wants to talk to you! I believe my practice greatly contributed to having a healthy pregnancy. Even through what felt like an eternity of morning, noon, and night sickness, I knew that if I made it to class I would feel much better afterward. The physical and mental strength that I maintained helped not only through a relatively short (5 hour) labor and delivery, but also allowed me to resume my usual activities much sooner after my son was born. Owen Philip was born on August 3, weighing 7 pounds, 6 ounces and is a very happy (and strong!) little guy. He's already working on his yoga too - he does a perfect baby baddha konasana in the bath tub and recently started on super-yogi!

Inner Fire's New Programs Manager, Karen Erstad

Karen Erstad Newsletter"Community is a beautiful thing. And the supportive, warm and welcoming community we have here at Inner Fire, in particular, is one that I feel honored to be a part of. The Inner Fire community has helped me evolve and brought so much goodness into my life, so to now serve this community as Inner Fire's new Programs Manager is an ideal way for me to contribute and make Inner Fire an even better place to practice yoga - on and off the mat. Over the next few months, you'll read and hear more about the various programs we're going to implement to better serve our community and members.

You may have noticed we're starting a book club. Our first book will be Ana Forrest's Fierce Medicine, and we'll meet to talk about it in November at Inner Fire. In Fierce Medicine, Forrest tells her own story of healing from the scars of abuse and physical handicaps, and reveals the proven practices that enabled her to move beyond her past into a life committed to helping others reconnect with their bodies, cultivate balance and start living in harmony with their Spirits.

Also in the works is a rewards program for Inner Fire members. More details on that in the next few months. If you have any ideas about how we can make Inner Fire an ever better place to practice, send me an e-mail. I can't promise we'll implement every suggestion, but we definitely want to hear your thoughts on Inner Fire. "

INSPIRATION
The Yoga Path
Grounding your Practice in Vata Season
By David Lincecum

Vata

Yoga's sister science, Ayurveda, teaches us how to bring harmony to our bodies and minds. The Ayurvedic tri-dosha of vata, pitta and kapha are three energetic systems or 'doshas' that inhabit our bodies and minds. These doshas also live in the motion of the cosmos and the atmosphere of mother earth. As the seasons change, so changes the doshic balance around us. Right now as we enter the cool, windy autumn season, the air and ether of vata dosha begins to dominate our environment and possibly our bodies and minds.

Vata is the dosha of movement. In the atmosphere, vata can be felt in the dry, cool winds that have begun to blow. It can be seen in the drying crops in the fields and leaves on the trees. In our bodies, vata governs all movement including circulation, our neural systems, even the movement of food. When in balance, vata provides us with creativity, communication, lightness of being, enthusiasm and flexibility.

An increase in vata can lead to a variety of physical problems: constipation, arthritis, exhaustion, generalized pain that moves and more. Emotionally, excess vata causes anxiety, nervousness, confusion and hyperactivity. How can we use our yoga asana practice to keep vata balanced? The biggest changes we make are in our intentions and attitudes on the mat.

Each of the doshas has "qualities" that increase when the dosha is present. Vata is dry, mobile, subtle, rough, light, and cold. To balance these qualities that will increase during the fall and early winter we need to invoke the opposite qualities. Experiment with invoking these vata reducing qualities to your practice. Go ahead, switch it up!

Vata - Dry, rough. Asana practice - Wet, smooth.
Bring forth a smooth watery quality of movement with a strong rhythm. Use a ujjayi breath that is steady, smooth, and a bit heavy. Take special care to hydrate and balance the electrolytes in your body. Drink warm water instead of cold, even in the hot room.

Vata - Light, subtle. Asana practice - Heavy, gross.

So often, we favor light and free movements. In vata season allow yourself to experience feeling heavy and grounded. In standing poses imagine a weight over your feet holding you firm. Pay extra attention to your exhale and invoke downward moving energy rather than upward. A stable practice means we should focus attention on our connection to the earth. Limit your range of motion to favor stability. Modify postures to gain stability first, with deeper expression second. We often focus on going deeper. Now is the time to be stable. Especially favor stable inversions like shoulderstand.

Vata - Cold. Asana practice - Hot.

Inner Fire Yoga has HOT covered for you! But I want to add that it is an ideal time of year to introduce a regular Hot Yoga practice into your yoga routine. The Hot Yoga sequence of poses is by design hot, stable and heavy. If you haven't tried 'Hot' or if you avoid it in the summer like me, try bringing it back for autumn!

In addition to these qualities, vata is also irregular, asymmetrical, and uneven. You should counter those qualities by keeping a regular schedule, both on the mat and off. A regular daily/weekly routine is the best cure for excess vata.

You can learn more about Ayurveda, vata seasonal recommendations and Ayurvedic Yoga Coaching services at my website, http://www.mantraflow.com.

Yoga Is Put To The Test As A Modern Treatment For Psychiatric Disorders

The results for yoga therapy, exercise, and a control group on a waiting list for treatment were compared. This study confirmed the efficacy of yoga over both other options."
