MOVING INWARD

Sun-Moon

A student went to his meditation teacher and said, "My meditation is horrible! I feel so distracted, or my legs ache, or I'm constantly falling asleep. It's just horrible!"

"It will pass," the teacher said matter-of-factly. A week later, the student came back to his teacher. "My meditation is wonderful! I feel so aware, so peaceful, so alive! It's just wonderful!"

"It will pass," the teacher replied matter-of-factly."

Student Spotlight

Susan and Mike Kitts

Susan and Michael "Prior to discovering Inner Fire Yoga six years ago, I had never tried yoga nor did I practice any form of exercise on a regular basis. Little did I know, at that time, that Hot Yoga would become my way of life. I now practice yoga at Inner Fire on average four times a week and cannot imagine my life without it. Yoga has helped me find myself and has brought balance to my life physically, spiritually, mentally and emotionally. While I am practicing yoga I feel a sense of calmness that inevitably carries over into my daily activities. Hot Yoga feeds my soul and when I am on my mat, I am at peace. Yoga is what I do and I fit everything else in my life around it. I am so grateful for Inner Fire Yoga and feel absolutely blessed to be a part of its community."
~Susan Kitts

"In May of this year I was recovering from shoulder surgery for a torn rotator cuff. I was also suffering from low back pain that had become constant after plaguing me off and on for years. I began to wonder if I would ever live without the pain again. My wife Susan had introduced me to Inner Fire Yoga awhile back and I had enjoyed it but never practiced regularly. I was desperate for relief though and saw yoga as a last hope. So as soon as I was cleared by my doctor, I jumped in. I've been practicing four or five days a week since May. Being able to do a strenuous workout was an immediate benefit and after a month I really began seeing improvement in my back and also with the strength and flexibility in my shoulder. Each week it seems I am pushing myself a little harder or trying a new variation of a pose and my whole body keeps feeling better. It feels like I'm turning back the hands of time. Thank you so much to Inner Fire Yoga and to all the amazing teachers."

New Receptionist Spotlight

Noelle Neumann

NoelleFor years I have wanted to try yoga. Regrettably, my mindset was, why pay for something I could do myself? After incurring a knee injury, my girlfriend suggested we go to Dr. Ruddy's "Hot Yoga Community Class" on Saturday afternoon. After class, it became quite apparent that the few postures I was practicing, in conjunction with my running, were not comparable to this experience. When I left that evening, after nearly walking into the door, it occurred to me that my mind hadn't experienced this state of relaxation in years! My personal goal shifted from finding an alternative to running, to finding a calm, peaceful mind.

While practicing at Inner Fire Yoga, I love discovering new parts of myself, and the calmness it brings me. Yoga has helped me grow in so many ways, especially in finding acceptance with myself and the world around me. The comforting and detoxifying effects of the heated rooms are divine and I truly love the community at Inner Fire. My knee is healing, too, which is a big bonus!

One more thing, I recently enrolled in Inner Fire Yoga's teacher training program. The program is going great. I love hearing my fellow trainees' stories and am getting more and more excited to share what I'm learning. I find comfort in knowing that as a yoga teacher, I'm free to grow along with my students. See you in class or at the front desk!

Yoga Babies
Samuel Senatori (August 2011)

SamuelBorn to Inner Fire Yoga student Megan Senatori (and Adam - our photographer)

"When I found out the exciting news that I was pregnant last December, I knew that I wanted to continue my yoga practice during my pregnancy. I happily maintained a regular yoga practice at Inner Fire Yoga throughout my pregnancy, supplementing studio practice with a home practice at the very beginning and end of my pregnancy. As a new mom, the support of the Inner Fire community and its excellent yoga teachers was incredibly valuable and appreciated. I believe that my yoga practice is largely responsible for an extremely easy pregnancy - and, I know that my practice provided me with the physical and mental stamina required for a long and difficult 15-hour labor and delivery. Samuel was born at 8:53 am on August 17, 2011, weighing 8 pounds, 5 ounces, and 22 inches long. He is an extremely mellow little guy - must be all that yoga!"

Also, check out our yoga babies page. **Please be as discrete as you'd like to be with the information you provide.**

INSPIRATION
The Yoga Path
By Inner Fire Yoga owner/director Marit Sathrum

Sun Moon
FOCUSTRATE

My beautiful daughter, age six, is very good at making up sniglets (like most kids). The other day when she was ignoring my calls from a neighboring room, I asked her with a hint of mother-frustration, "Why didn't you answer me?" Her answer: "I was focustrating on putting on my shoes." Immediately, after a good laugh, I recognized this word as The Perfect Yoga Sniglet. (Per Wikipedia: sniglet is a neologism, popularized by comedian/actor Rich Hall, described as any word that doesn't appear in the dictionary, but should.)

I beat myself up constantly in yoga class (you might actually relate to this):

"Why did that person place their mat immediately in front of mine?"
"Why is that yoga teacher next door playing the music so loud, it is distracting!"
"This yoga teacher plays the dumbest music, I need something a little more upbeat!"
"That yoga teacher isn't holding the poses long enough."
"The yoga teacher should open the door, it is too hot in here."
"The person next to me stinks."
"The person next to me breaths too loud."
"This isn't the yoga teacher I thought I was getting, if I had known my favorite teacher was getting a sub, I wouldn't have come."
"It's too crowded in here."
"I've got to go on a diet."
"Tomorrow, I am going to cut out sugar."
"I wish I wouldn't have spoken to my kids that way this morning."
"I've got so much work to do, I need to get to work asap!"
"Why can't I be better at ____________(you fill in the blank)."
"Why am I so __________________ (you fill in the blank)."
"Etc. Etc. Etc."

It seems that, as my practice becomes physically less challenging due to repetition of practice, my mind becomes less focused. What I loved most about my very first Hot Yoga class in 1993 was the total and complete focus required to make it through class. At that time, I was grateful for the 90 minute escape from my misery (due mostly to a job that didn't resonate with me). Now I recognize that first class as my first real meditation experience through the practice of asana (yoga poses).

As I let go of the need to figure out or to perfect poses, I find yoga practice to be one of watching the mind and bringing it back to a place of evenness, of non-judgment, of non-thinking, of stillness, of peace.

My yoga practice has become about letting go of those never-ending ticker-tapes of mostly useless and even potentially damaging thoughts, and making the mental/physical/emotional/spiritual choice to be here now, breathing and feeling deeply. In a word: focustrating. I challenge you, as practitioners of yoga, to do the same: let go of the attachments to the physical asanas (the mirror on the wall), empty the mind of judgments/analysis, let go of the need to control, and FOCUSTRATE!

Yoga Reduces The Physical And Psychological Symptoms Of Chronic Pain In Women With Fibromyalgia

Excerpt:

"Yoga promotes this concept - that we are not our bodies, our experiences, or our pain. This is extremely useful in the management of pain," she says. "Moreover, our findings strongly suggest that psychological changes in turn affect our experience of physical pain."

September's Featured Yoga Pose
Supta Badha Konasana (reclining bound angle)

SSBKBenefits: Releases the low back, stretches the hamstrings

Supta Badha Konasana is a restorative pose that allows the body to relax while the full healing effects of the pose take over. This pose is ideal for relieving stress and tension in the body.

Instructions:
1. While sitting, bring your heels together to form a diamond shape with your legs.
2. Using your hands as support, exhale and lean back towards the floor. Spread the backside of the pelvis to release the lower back and upper buttocks.
3. Lean all the way to the floor. You can use a pillow, blanket or bolster as seen in the photo to support the head, shoulders and neck.
4. Grip the upper part of the thighs and press the outer thighs away from the sides of the torso. You do this by rotating the external part of the inner thighs.
5. Calmly move your arms to lay on the floor with the palms facing upwards.
