Student & Community Spotlight
Kathleen Slattery-Moschkau
This month Inner Fire Yoga is excited to feature Kathleen Slattery-Moschkau of the Kathleen Show for both the Student and Community Spotlight. Kathleen Slattery-Moschkau is a filmmaker, radio host, and dedicated yogi who encourages people to live their boldest and healthiest lives. You can catch up with her on her nationally syndicated radio program, The Kathleen Show (heard locally on 92.1 The Mic) or on Facebook. Enjoy!
"Before finding hot yoga at Inner Fire, I had given yoga a good old college try on several occasions spanning many years. I'm a runner and someone under constant deadline for my work in the media and as much as I knew I needed help on flexibility and posture and mindfulness, I found myself antsy, bored, frustrated and watching the clock each class.
But one day I stumbled into a heated class at Inner Fire and half-way through, I started to cry. Not sad tears, just some sort of amazing release that caught me off guard. The heat felt so good on my body and mind, the sweat pouring off my body felt so cleansing, and the calming instruction was exactly what I needed to regroup. I felt my center, maybe for the first time ever...a level of euphoria and peace I desperately needed.
From that day on, hot yoga (Flow and a bit of Hot), became part of my life. I hesitate to call it an addiction, because that word can ring negative. What I do know is that when I'm diligent about attending 2-3 classes per week, things feel right-my relationships go better, my work is more creative, my body feels alive.
When I walk out of a hot yoga class, I feel beautifully spent and calm and I'm grateful. I sing that from the rooftops to my friends, family, and on my show because I do believe it has saved my life."

Yoga Babies
Milo Jurgella (November 2010) - born to Sara Jurgella
Hello Inner Fire folk. This is Sara Jurgella, I was the pregnant woman that was fortunate enough to practice at Inner Fire throughout my pregnancy:) We welcomed Milo James Jurgella into the world on November 11th... he is a beautiful, happy, healthy baby boy and we are over the moon excited to have him in our family! I also wanted to tell you that I was able to have a natural birth, four amazingly short hours of labor, and Milo was a 9lb 13oz baby boy. I attest much of my ease in labor this time around to being able to have a consistent yoga practice throughout my pregnancy. I look forward to coming in and practicing soon! I did some yoga at home today and holy man is it easier without a big ol' baby in there! :) Peace- Sara Jurgella Inner Fire Yoga would like to recognize all babies born to mothers practicing yoga in our community. If this is you, please email your baby photo and information to Inner Fire Yoga. Also, check out our yoga babies page. **Please be as discrete as you'd like to be with the information you provide.** |

The Yoga Path "Ahimsa Yama" by David Lincecum, Inner Fire Yoga Teacher
The First Yama, Ahimsa. The practices of Yama are the codes of conduct that remove obstacles from our path of Yoga. Ahimsa means non-violence, and this is the first and most important practice on the path. In the wisdom teachings of the Yoga Sutra the sage Patanjali writes:
2.35 As a Yogi becomes firmly grounded in non-injury (ahimsa), other people who come near will naturally lose any feelings of hostility.
Read the simple words of Patanjali and smile. When you practice non-violence others will also benefit. You will spread peace. How beautiful is that? Let's get started!
Practicing non-violence seems easy at first glance. Don't harm. For many yogis this extends very far, but you can choose the depth of your practice. At most yoga ashrams ahimsa means a vegetarian lifestyle, extending non-violence to animals. Ahimsa means non-violence in thought as well as action. We work on controlling our spontaneous anger and removing any lingering resentments. We are emptying our backpack of anger that we may have carried for years. In Ahimsa we turn from retaliation to acceptance.
And what of non-violence to self? We look to stop harmful actions we may consciously or unconsciously take toward ourselves. On the mat, we pay attention to signs from our body. We modify poses, without prompting. We stop competing with ourselves, having to go deeper everyday, and begin to practice with compassion for ourselves. Just because we can do the pose, does not mean we should.
The benefits flow. When we cease to harm, we remove stress and strain on our bodies and our souls. When we modify a pose in an act of ahimsa, others who may be near also benefit. Ahimsa builds community. Where violence is absent, love has room to flourish.
Ahimsa does not mean becoming a doormat and letting others walk over you. Remember Mahatma Gandhi who said, "I am a soldier of Peace," as he led a nation in a declared non-violent battle against discrimination. Ahimsa.
My yoga teacher Rolf Gates says, "Yamas are the firm ground on which we stand as yogis." Think of Ahimsa as you bring heels and big toes together, find the four corners of the feet and bring your body into Tadasana. Then let it flow from you to others. |

New Study Finds New Connection Between Yoga And Mood

December's Featured Yoga Pose
Feathered Peacock Pose (Pincha Mayurasana)
- Perform a modified Adho Muhka Svanasana at your yoga wall, with your palms and forearms on the floor. Your fingertips should be right at the base of the wall, and your forearms parallel to each other at shoulder width. This pose isn't quite as scary as Adho Mukha Vrksasana; it has a firmer base of support, and the head isn't as far away from the floor. But it can still be somewhat intimidating. To ready yourself for and secure yourself in this inversion, firm your shoulder blades against your back torso and pull them toward your tailbone. Then rotate your upper arms outward, to keep the shoulder blades broad, and hug your forearms inward. Finally spread your palms and press your inner wrists firmly against the floor.
- Now bend one knee and step the foot in, closer to the wall (let's say the left leg), but keep the other (i.e. right) leg active by extending through the heel. Then take a few practice hops before you try to launch yourself upside down. Sweep your right leg through a wide arc toward the wall and kick your left foot off the floor, immediately pushing through the heel to straighten the leg. Hop up and down like this several times, each time pushing off the floor a little higher. Exhale deeply each time you hop.
- Hopping up and down like this may be all you can manage for now. Regularly practice your strength poses, like Adho Mukha Svanasana (or the modified version that's the beginning position here), Plank Pose, and Chaturanga Dandasana. Eventually you'll be able to kick all the way into the pose. At first your heels may crash into the wall, but again with more practice you'll be able to swing your heels up lightly to the wall.
- If your armpits and groins are tight, your lower back may be deeply arched. To lengthen it, draw your front ribs into your torso, reach your tailbone toward your heels, and slide your heels higher up the wall. Draw the navel toward the spine. Squeeze the outer legs together and roll the thighs in. In Pincha Mayurasana your head should be off the floor; hang it from a spot between your shoulder blades and gaze out into the center of the room.
- Stay in the pose 10 to 15 seconds. Gradually work your way up to 1 minute. When you come down, be sure not to sink onto the shoulders. Keep your shoulder blades lifted and broad, and take one foot down at a time with an exhalation. Lift into Adho Mukha Svanasana for 30 seconds to a minute. We tend to kick up with the same leg all the time: be sure to alternate your kicking leg, one day right, next day left.
