Student Spotlight
Kimberly Rataczak
My first class was with a friend, who was a regular member of Inner Fire. I was instantly hooked but didn't immediately commit myself due to my busy schedule. It wasn't until many months later when I realized through a tragedy that I needed yoga. I began my dedication to this practice after a very close and dear friend passed away. I was able to channel my confusion, grief, and sadness into a harmonious place inside, through each movement and breath. I found that it was the best workout possible for my mind and body. Yoga brought me out of a dark place and shed light on all that is beautiful inside of us all. I will eternally be grateful for this gift and will continue to show my appreciation through my practice. |

Sheltering Animals of Abuse Victims ("SAAV")
Two Inner Fire yoga students, Pam Hart and Megan Senatori, are currently featured in the November issue of Oprah Magazine for their charitable work on behalf of human and animal victims of domestic abuse. While law students in 2001, Pam and Megan co-founded Sheltering Animals of Abuse Victims ("SAAV"), an all volunteer non-profit organization that provides confidential temporary shelter for the animals of domestic abuse victims while the victim attempts to leave an abusive relationship. Because domestic abuse shelter typically do not allow animals into shelter, domestic abuse victims with animals are often forced to leave their animals behind when they leave an abusive relationship. A 2004 study found that 48% of women entering domestic abuse shelters reported that they did not seek safety for themselves sooner, because they were concerned for the safety or well-being of their animals. SAAV's shelter services are provided in Dane County through a collaboration with the Domestic Abuse Intervention Services and the Dane County Humane Society. SAAV also works to raise community awareness across the country about the link between domestic abuse and animal cruelty. To learn more, visit www.saavprogram.org.

Introducing New Receptionist Elise Wojcik
Elise sought regular yoga practice almost two years ago mainly as an outlet for stress. After researching the Hot Yoga series she became intrigued by the idea of Bikram's "Torture Chambers" and wanted to see just how tough she really was. She soon found enjoyment in the challenge that each new class brings, and liked how regular practice encouraged a more conscious and healthful lifestyle. In her practice she found the relief from stress that she was looking for, but also how to calm an anxious and wandering mind. She is very grateful to be apart of the Inner Fire Yoga community and its unique bubble of positive energy! Elise graduated from UW-Madison this spring with a degree in Biology. In the future she plans to pursue a career in the health care field, however right now she is enjoying rediscovering her passions for biking, running, reading, and live music, as well as volunteering for HospiceCare Inc., and the AIDS Network.

The Yoga Path "Apharigraha Yama" by Megan Brown, Inner Fire Yoga Teacher
Apharigraha, or non-possessiveness, is not necessarily my favorite yama, but it is the yama I think about most often. The most obvious interpretation relates to the stuff we own and the resources we use. How much of what we own do we really need on a daily basis? If we don't need it, why do we cling to these objects? Often, I have a sense of false comfort to have certain things nearby. Could there be another place from which to draw that sense of stability or comfort rather than owning an object? In order to keep my possession of things in check, once a season I take an inventory of the things I actually use, and I start shedding things I do not. I donate them to non-profits, second hand stores, or give them away to friends.
There's another interpretation, that is similar to the Buddhist concept of non-attachment. Like most human beings, I get upset when things aren't going "my way." Possession even shows up in the words we use to describe our frustration. It is as if we own a path and someone is blocking our access to OUR path. Which is not true - our time in the world is filled with some combination of our hard work and the randomness of our interaction with others.
Really, the heart of non-possessiveness is realizing what we have influence over. I have influence over my actions, my hard work, and my attitudes. I do not have influence over the helpfulness of others, the things I own, and what opportunities I am offered. There are many parts of myself that I can shift and change, and an array of things apart from me that I cannot. Realizing these boundaries eventually makes you less likely to complain, more likely to change what is within your power, and will help you pay more attention to meaningful events. |
In The News Entrepreneur's Burning Inner Fire Creates Successful Yoga Business

SBDC Assistance Helps Yoga Business Succeed
When Marit Sathrum moved to Madison from California in 2002, she didn't plan to become a business owner. But a "for lease" sign in a vacant shop window, led this MBA-bearing yoga instructor to fulfill her dream of opening her own yoga studio. Though serendipity played a role in Sathrum's decision to open her studio, her business expertise and assistance from the UW-Madison Small Business Development Center (SBDC) enabled her to turn her business into a success story.
In 2007 Sathrum decided to move her business, expanding both the facility size and the services she offered to her patrons. That's when she contacted SBDC business counselor Jack Reiners at the advice of a fellow entrepreneur. "She told me how great it was for her and her business to have this free business counseling," recalls Sathrum. "Before I knew it, I was working with Jack and Rena Gelman, who was in training at the time."
Sathrum says she was fortunate to have not just one but two business advisors. "I think of them as really solid advisors, sounding boards. They keep me on the straight and narrow," says Sathrum, who still consults with Reiners and Gelman on a regular basis. "I have received really strong financial and analytical help from them as well."
Quality Business Management Creates Expansion and Employment Sathrum custom built her eco-friendly studio on Madison's University Avenue. "Since then business more than doubled," she says. "I think the move and changing my business plan is the reason. But that was completely dependant on Jack and Rena helping me to make the decisions along the way that ultimately resulted in the growth of my business." Since opening her Inner Fire Yoga, Sathrum has grown from one to five lines of business within her studio, and she will soon offer yoga teacher training. Inner Fire Yoga currently employs seven people and contracts with 15 others to provide a range of service from yoga to massage therapy.
Sathrum reflects on the success of her business. "There are a lot of Yoga studios that don't do as well. I'm an MBA and I know you have to develop the other parts of the business: marketing, accounting, public relations, outreach. We do a lot of community outreach. We have raised over $25,000 for charity."

November's Featured Yoga Pose
Garland Pose (Malasana) 1. Squat with your feet as close together as possible. (Keep your heels on the floor if you can; otherwise, support them on a folded mat.)
2. Separate your thighs slightly wider than your torso. Exhaling, lean your torso forward and fit it snugly between your thighs.
3. Press your elbows against your inner knees, bringing your palms to together in Anjali Mudra (Salutation Seal), and resist the knees into the elbows. This will help lengthen your front torso.
4. To go further, press your inner thighs against the sides of your torso. Reach your arms forward, then swing them out to the sides and notch your shins into your armpits. Press your finger tips to the floor, or reach around the outside of your ankles and clasp your back heels.
5. Hold the position for 30 seconds to 1 minute, then inhale, straighten the knees, and stand into Uttanasana. |
