Student Spotlight Sarah LeGrand

As a mother of 6 and owner of multiple family home daycare sites I experience my daily amount of stress. Up until 3 months ago, I religiously attended the gym in an attempt to relieve some of my stress. I became your typical gym rat, working out timelessly on the elliptical, treadmill, or bike. It seemed like I was always in competition with myself, trying to go farther, faster and for longer periods of time.
One day, my oldest daughter, Makenzie, approached me with an idea that would change my daily life quite significantly. She invited me to try yoga at Inner Fire with her for the first time. At first thought I was intrigued, nervous, excited, and skeptical all at once. The idea that stretching on a mat would be a "workout" had me in disbelief, but I tried it. Only five minutes into my first class I came to the realization that Power Flow is anything but stretching on a mat. Figuratively speaking, that first class really kicked my butt!
Now, only three months after my first class, yoga has become my biggest hobby. Not only has it been a wonderful exercise, my flexibility has increased while my stress has decreased, and my mood has been lighter and more pleasant. It is truly an amazing feeling to be able to surrender and just be. That is what yoga has done for me thus far.
My new challenge within my practice is to let go of my ego, my expectations, and doubting my doubts. If I continue attending classes regularly at Inner Fire Yoga I am certain that meeting these goals will be possible. I'm excited to see where else yoga will take me in life and for the upcoming journey that I will have on my mat.
Namaste.

"When I first got to OM, I was scared I wouldn't 'fit in'. But the instructors and other cancer yoginis were all there for the same reason. I wept through most of the classes, while I was going through treatment - but they were tears of joy and relief mingled with tears of fear. I found myself in a room full of love, courage, endurance and recovery. I knew I was safe in that room, even after my surgeries when I could barely move. I was safe. OM has also started an OM yoga for Women's Cancer Survivor Teacher Training Course giving yoga teachers the ability to develop knowledge and experience in teaching a class themselves for Women Cancer Survivors." - student, OM yoga for Women Cancer Survivors.

 The Yoga Path
Obstacles by Joan Bliefernicht, Inner Fire Yoga Teacher
As we transition towards the end of summer, many of us are reflecting on our summer plans and commitments that we made this past June. Did you make a commitment to a formal summer yoga challenge at the studio? Whatever our progress has been and whether we fulfilled our intentions and goals, or fell short, self inquiry (a form of meditation) may help us with our next challenge, goal, or commitment as Autumn approaches.
In Book 2.3 of the Yoga Sutras, the great sage Patanjali names the five obstacles (kleshas) to the practice of the eight limbs of yoga as: ignorance, egoism, attachment, hatred, and clinging to life. The two obstacles that may relate most to the challenges we experience in meeting our objectives are egoism and attachment. The practice of yoga is there to help us remove the egoism that represents our dual nature, so we can experience our True Self. Attachment is the pursuit of experiences outside of ourselves, experiences that are pleasurable and that we feel will provide us with happiness. As we reflect on this, it is apparent that true happiness is not the tangible outcome, while being present and aware in each moment of our life is.
So whether you completed your 60 yoga classes, had the prettiest garden in the neighborhood, or were able to finish the marathon that you trained so hard for, in reflection, give yourself a break. The practices you participated in to achieve your goals allowed you the experience of witnessing and living in the essence of who you really are. The outcome is irrelevant. Having a great time this summer was "the yoga". |
August's Featured Yoga Skill
Standing Head to Knee Pose (Dandayamana Janushirsasana)
The standing head to knee is the fifth posture in the Bikram/Hot sequence of yoga poses. As you move into this posture, you should experience a nice stretch of the spine, shoulders, and hamstrings while strengthening the thighs and ankles. Standing Head to Knee helps develop concentration, patience and determination: it is amarriage between the mind and body. Though it is part of the Bikram/Hot sequence of postures, the standing head to knee, or Dandayamana Janushirsasana, can be worked into any yoga practice.
- Start off by standing with your feet together in mountain pose.
- Round forward and lift your right foot up in front of you and grab it with both hands. Your fingers should be interlaced around the arch of the right foot. Keep your thumbs in line with your index fingers, not around the tops of your feet.
- Straighten your left leg and tighten the quadriceps muscles arond your left knee - make it strong. Lean slightly forward, so the weight is transferred to the ball of your left foot. If you can see your left knee in the mirror, make sure the muscle is active. If you are struggling to keep the quadriceps muscles engaged, this is where you will stay, continuing to strengthen those muscles.
- If you are able to hold your quads tight, the next step is to extend your right leg out, keeping the extension slow, as you maintain your balance in the pose and be careful not to hyperextend the leg.
- Continue extending the right leg out until it is parallel with the floor. The easiest way to accomplish this is, instead of pushing the right foot out, think of pushing it up. As you do this, lengthen your spine from your neck down to your tailbone.
- Let your shoulders fall to their natural position as you extend your arms, maintaining the grip on your right foot, and straighten your leg, making sure to engage the muscles of your right thigh.
- If both legs are nice and tight, begin to round your spine and drop your elbows around your right calf muscle as you lower your head to your knee. Avoid dropping your abdominals onto your thigh. Think of pulling your navel up and into your spine as your fold forward. As you drop your head to your knee, tuck your chin into your chest. This will extend the stretch of the spine up through your neck.
- Hold this position for 30 to 60 seconds, breathing evenly and smoothly, before bringing your right foot back to the floor.
- Repeat Steps 2 through 8 for the other side of your body.

Yoga Improves Quality of Life in Women with Breast Cancer
In this study focusing on the effects of yoga on quality of life (QOL), 61 women with breast cancer undergoing radiotherapy were randomly assigned to either a yoga or a wait-list group. The yoga group attended biweekly classes during the 6 weeks of radiotherapy. "Participants completed measures of QOL, fatigue, benefit finding (finding meaning in the cancer experience), intrusive thoughts, sleep disturbances, depressive symptoms, and anxiety before radiotherapy and then again 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months after the end of radiotherapy. . . . " ". . . . Our results indicated that the yoga program was associated with statistically and clinically significant improvements in aspects of QOL." Abstract: PubMed. by Chandwani KD, Thornton B, Perkins GH, Arun B, Raghuram NV, Nagendra HR, Wei Q, Cohen L., "Yoga improves quality of life and benefit finding in women undergoing radiotherapy for breast cancer," Journal of the Society for Integrative Oncology [2010 Spring;8(2):43-55].
