Student Spotlight

I started doing yoga as part of a general effort to improve my health, which I had neglected for the better part of the prior six years. My sister had taken me to a hot yoga class in Seattle (which, I will add, I saw mostly from my back!). I was intrigued enough to search out and try classes at Inner Fire when I returned to Madison.

First, a bit about my prior state of health.  When I started at IFY I was: overweight by about fifty pounds, pre-hypertensive, pre-diabetic, experiencing chronic stress, poor sleep and taking something like eight prescription medications. Prior to this period of poor health, I was an avid hiker and outdoor enthusiast and in generally very good health. Off the record, I think the decline was somehow linked to that GW Bush and/or that Dick Cheney, but I suppose such idle speculation is pointless and divisive.

I started taking Yin classes in March and, at the same time, carefully focused on my diet. I tried to systematically under-eat, mostly fruit/protein-mix smoothies, nibbled on some high grain crackers, drank lots of water and never touched sugar/sugary products except for the fruits. I ate very little meat, salad based dinners. The Yin classes were amazing in helping me begin to understand what was going on in my body... to feel it. It sounds ridiculous as I write it down - how could I be so oblivious for so long?

One of my favorite things about my experience thus far has been the diversity of instructors at IFY; four Yin classes each week with four different teachers, and each with a slightly different perspective and approach. They all, however, emphasize the importance of adapting your practice to your body and letting it guide you - finding your personal edges and exploring them. I can still recall how good I felt at the end of classes, physically, almost as if my body was trying to tell me something (doh!).
One month with the above program (3-4 Yin classes a week) and I dropped from a 38 waist pant back to 34 (where I had been 8 years ago). I also lost about 30 pounds, and then another 10 over the next several months. I've stopped taking almost all of the prescription "medications" without a hint of a problem.

Over the last month I've started experimenting with the non-Yin classes and have been enjoying them a lot. The instructors are wonderfully accommodating to my can't-help-but-improve balance and stamina! For anyone just trying to break into an exercise routine, I'd start with Yin. For one thing, you can practice the breathing and meditative skills necessary to survive the other classes! Ok, I'm half kidding about that ... just experiment and openly listen.

Melanie de Jesus

Melanie de Jesus was born in Virginia and spent her childhood in Chicago. She was blessed with a lot of international travel with her father who teaches at the med school here at the UW and consults for many global health and sciences agencies, and also on her own as a professional musician. She is a classical violist trained at the Jacobs School at Indiana University and is tenured with the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra. She moved to Madison in November 2009 and credits her dedication to Hot Yoga with providing her with the strength, focus and intensity she needs to pursue her passions. As of January 2010, she teaches at Our Lady Queen of Peace school, performed in the 75th anniversary season of the EPO, is launching her own event planning company in July 2010, and planning to enter law school in the Fall of 2011. The Yoga Path
Independence

This week's Yoga Path was written by Inner Fire Yoga teacher Ken Kloes. Enjoy!

Here is an old Cherokee story...

One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people.  He said, "My son, the battle is between 2 'wolves' inside us all.  One is the 'evil wolf': anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.  The other is the 'good wolf':  joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith."  The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: "Which wolf wins?"  The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."

Which wolf do you want to feed?  Do you desire independence from the angry, envious, self-degrading and jealous 'evil wolf'?  Every breath in each yoga practice is an opportunity to break free from the bonds of these behaviors.  When in a yoga pose, you might observe the person next to you and envy their flexibility and strength, and perhaps wish that if only you were a little more like that person, then you would be happier and more fulfilled.  The outcome is suffering - with thoughts of inadequacy and self-mutilation.

Or... one can feed the 'good wolf' of joy, peace, love, humility and kindness.  Keep the focus inside the body and breathe into the pleasure of you.   Notice the lengthening of your muscles and tendons, feel the strength that you are building, breathe deep, and delight in what you can do today.  When one drops the drama of what can't be done, and turns the focus on what can, the 'good wolf' is fed, creating independence from the destructive behaviors of the 'evil wolf'.

This independence is achieved one breath at a time, with lots of practice and some sweat along the way!

Ask the Teacher
Amy Roland

AmyEvery month we ask one of our yoga teachers for their perspective on a question often voiced in our yoga community. If you have a question you would like answered, please email us here.

I am confused, some teachers say "just kill yourself" and others say "tune in to what my body is telling me." Which is it?

That's an easy question to answer. Why would we want to kill ourselves? Having a STRONG yoga practice is not the same as having a practice in which we're consumed with how STRONG we are. That old saying, No Pain... No Gain  has no place in traditional yoga. A student who enjoys a strong practice has developed the fine dance between beautiful asanas and hard work. Their practice appears effortless.  Lets remember a true yoga practice takes discipline, time and commitment. As we deepen our practice our minds become still and the asanas become subtle in nature. In this state we begin to realize the transformational effects of yoga. We become more in tune with our breath, our body and our inner being.  Think of yoga practice as a sanctuary where you learn to listen to your body.  Practicing yoga consistently will remove the clutter that consumes us,  making room for more clarity, joy, refinement, freedom and harmony in our lives. Yoga unlocks the bliss that resides in each and everyone of us. Begin to listen to your inner body and enjoy all the benefits that yoga can bring to your life.

July's Featured Yoga Skill
Ustrasana - oosh-TRAHS-anna (Camel pose)

Camel
In the camel pose, your torso is shaped like the camel's hump. Creating the hump shape causes the front body, including the chest, abdomen, and quadriceps, to be stretched. This is a great counter stretch if your daily activities cause you to hunch forward.

  1. Come up onto your knees. Place padding under your knees if this is too much pressure for your knees.
  2. Reach your hands back and place them face down on your sacrum.
  3. Draw your heart up as if a string were attached to it and pulled from above, lifting you upwards.
  4. Remain here unless the following is available to you: Reach your hands back one at a time to grasp your heels.
  5. Bring your hips forward so they are above your knees.
  6. Let your head come back, opening your throat.
  7. Remain here for several breaths, and then come out by placing your hands back on your sacrum and slowly straighen up.

Yoga Medical News

Medical News
Pose-itively great news for all you yoga lovers out there: Hitting the mat regularly does more than loosen up your muscles; it's also good for your heart. A study from the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee found that doing yoga followed by guided medtitation improves your heart rate rhythmic changes from beat to beat that indicates your ticker's health. Yoga's emphasis on breathing, meditation and relaxation has been linked in previous studies with other heart-healthy benefits, such as reduced stress. According to Cyndi Lee, FITNESS advisory board member and owner of Om Yoga in New York City, "For best results, breathe deeply but quietly as you go, and only through you nose." [ed. This will give the relaxation effect.]

Silence is Golden

Out of respect for your fellow yogis who desire a peaceful place to practice, please be very quiet in the yoga room. Also, if you are in the lobby and notice that the massage room door is closed, please be a bit quieter to ensure a relaxing environment for the person receiving the massage. Thank you.

Help the CORK!

Cork
We love our cork floors. They are not as hard as hardwood and not as soft and stinky as carpet. We think it's the perfect surface for a yoga practice. Not to mention it is a truly sustainable flooring material.

However, our favorite floor needs your help. Leaving large sweat puddles after doing yoga is taking its toll.

PLEASE remember to mop up your puddles so our floors stay healthy too.
