Andrew Larson

Andrew Larson
Two years ago I was diagnosed with chronic gastritis caused by diet and stress.  Furthermore, I have been unable to ride a bike for three years because of a severely tight I.T. band on my right side.  Fortunately, I am able to run.  I used ibuprofen to ease my pain causing stomach problems.  Physicians put me on prescription antacids to help cure me.  None of the western medicine did much to ease the problem.  I had to seek out other solutions to stem the tide of my discomfort. I stopped all pain killers, alcohol, and caffeine. I began by going to Inner Fire Yoga--I gravitated to the Sunday night Yin class taught by Joan. This class really helped me out.  It slowed my body and mind down. I bought the 20 package option--and went once a week. I remembered the posses, and began doing them at home. I dramatically increased my flexibility.  I am able to run--unfortunately, I still cannot ride a bike because of the I.T. band.

Like most Americans, I was rushing from work to social activities while inhaling convenience foods and caffeine.  I thought I was eating healthy foods--I was vegetarian and shopped at the Willy Street Coop--I ate organic food--yet many of the foods still came out of boxes or cans--processed with an over abundance of preservatives and sugars.  With the help of chiropractor Dr. Kim McGriff at Discover Family Chiropractic, dietitian Katy Wallace of Human Nature, and Michelle Buchannan of Isthmus Acupuncture, I changed my diet eliminating processed foods and sugars.  I dropped thirty pounds and increased my flexibility even more.
Yin class, along with a dramatic change in diet, has helped ease my stomach problems. I still struggle with some discomfort.  I still have stiff muscles. However, yoga at Inner Fire has changed my life dramatically as I am healing and eating amazingly well.  I am calm and have not taken a pain pill in 18 months!  My advice to anyone suffering from chronic discomfort or pain is to slow down, breathe, eliminate sugar and chemicals from your diet, and do YOGA! It is my intent to fully heal my stomach and get back on a bike. I miss biking way more than cake.

"...The other great thing, which I think is a brilliant business move on the part of Marit Sathrum, the owner, is that they also have what they call the "Personal Revolutions," which you can choose to participate in. You basically either commit yourself to practicing either 52 classes in 91 days or 65 classes in 91 days (if you're hardcore). They have charts up on the wall where you mark the classes you've completed with a tiny sticker (who doesn't love stickers?!?!) and if you complete the challenge you get a medal!!! A MEDAL!!! It may seem kind of lame, but it takes a LOT of work and you feel really great at the end of it and as a bonus you're more toned and fit because you've been going to yoga so much! They also put lists of the people that complete the challenge on the website, which makes you feel even better about yourself. What gym is going to give you that kind of praise?!?! Also, it's good for the studio because it encourages you to continue to come back again and again. IT'S A GREAT IDEA."

The Law of Abundance - May 2010

What is the Law of abundance? It is a law of service and generosity, a law of giving and receiving. The principle behind divine abundance is simple: abundance in the Universe is endless in all forms: material, energetic, physical, spiritual. The exciting part is that we all have equal access to it. Access is "granted" to anyone who is open to it, anyone who opens his or her heart and mind to receive. Just how does one do that?  It is done through "right mindedness." That is, through tuning one's thoughts and mind to a higher level, a level that inspires love, joy, service and gratitude. By focusing and acting upon positive emotions, we actually draw more love, joy, gratitude, etc. to us. When we offer thoughts of love, we receive love; when we focus on joy, we find more things to be joyful about; and when we look to serve, life serves us well. According to the law of divine abundance, "give, and you will receive abundantly in return." At Inner Fire Yoga, we experience divine abundance in action. Our yoga community represents those who effort to improve upon their health and well being: physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. By practicing yoga, we release stress and negativity, and we grow stronger, more flexible, mindful, cheerful and calm.  We open to all that might arise, and we tune in to a positive flow. By doing so, our studio is filled with people moving towards "right mindedness," which in turn draws more and more of the positive (abundance) into our community. As a studio, we understand the importance of service and "giving back". That's why we celebrate annually with our Abundance Celebration.  This past weekend, we celebrated seven plus years of offering yoga classes and massage therapy to our community by offering free yoga (by donation) to our community, a silent auction to raise money for charities and a VERY fun party on Sat. night (check out the pictures!) with free chair massage, live music, games (Twister and Limbo), astrology readings, a DJ dance party and mendhi henna art. A deep and sincere thank you goes out to each and every person who joined us in our Abundance Celebration over the weekend! So next time you are in a place of negativity, take a moment to check yourself and remember the law of divine abundance and ask yourself: "How can I switch this around and make this an abundant possibility? How can I give and/or receive in positive abundance?" You will surely be delighted to find the outcome to be surprisingly abundant beyond your dreams.

May's Featured Yoga Skill
Garudasana (Eagle Pose)

Reid in EagleBald Eagles can be seen in Wisconsin. You can see many of them along the Wisconsin River in Prairie du Chien during the months of February and March.

Eagles of course are our national symbol. A symbol of strength borrowed from the Romans. It is also said the eagle became our national symbol because, at one of the first battles of the Revolution, the noise of the fighting woke the sleeping eagles, and they flew from their nests and circled over the heads of the fighting men, all the while venting their loud cries. "They are shrieking for Freedom," said the patriots.

The Bald Eagle is also a sacred bird in some Native American cultures, and its feathers are central to religious and spiritual customs among them. Eagles in these traditions are also sometimes considered spiritual messengers between gods and humans.

Here are some basic instructions for Eagle Pose:
  1. Bend at the knees and shift your weight onto the right leg.
  2. Bring the left leg up and cross the left thigh over the right.
  3. Hook the left foot around the right calf. It's not necessary to hook your foot all the way around.
  4. Bring the arms out in front.
  5. Cross the right arm over the left and bring the palms to touch.
  6. Lift the elbows while keeping the shoulders sliding down the back.
  7. Hold 5-10 breaths.
  8. Repeat on the other side.
Beginners: If you are having trouble with the balance, use the wall to support your back. If you can't hook foot around your calf, put a block or blankets under the wrapping foot.

Advanced: Start to come into a forward bend, bringing the elbows in front of the knees. Bring the thumbs to your third eye. (See photo above)

Vinyasa Yoga Works as an Adjunct Treatment for Depressed Patients

Medical News
Assessing the benefits of Vinyasa yoga as an adjunctive treatment for depressed patients who were not responding adequately to antidepressant medication, this study showed participants exhibiting significant decreases in depressive symptoms.
Eleven participants were recruited for an 8-week open trial of yoga classes. Researchers "found that 10 participants completed follow-up assessments, 9 of 10 were positive about their experience, and all provided feedback about what was and was not helpful about yoga, as well as barriers to class attendance. Over the 2-month period, participants exhibited significant decreases in depression symptoms and significant increases in an aspect of mindfulness and in behavior activation. This pilot study provided support for continuing to investigate Vinyasa yoga as an adjunct treatment for depression. The next step required is a rigorous randomized clinical trial."
