Student Spotlight Rachele Malek
At this point, I'm three classes away from finishing my second personal revolution in six months [she finished!]. I've come a long way from the girl who was nervous giggling in the back of my first Inner Fire Flow class in January of 2009. Although I didn't become completely immersed into my yoga practice until October, from the first moment I stepped into the doors I felt a special connection to the studio and the instructors. I knew my life was about to change. I didn't know I was searching until I found everything I ever wanted at Inner Fire Yoga; I have been transformed physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. I am taking my passion for yoga to a new level and hope to be certified to teach by next summer. If I can do for one person what Marit and her instructors did for me, I know I will be infinitely happy. Thank you all for being such an inspiration! Namaste. |
Introducing New Receptionist Jessica Gartner
I first came to yoga as a way to get in shape while increasing my flexibility, but nothing held my attention long. Then, almost four years ago, I stumbled on hot yoga - and despite the occasional break, it's still got my heart. My practice has expanded to include each of the styles taught on Inner Fire's heated floors, and I can't imagine not being a part of this community. Yoga has become a necessity, and I'm happier, calmer and stronger than I've ever been.
The confidence and clarity I found on the mat spread to the rest of my life, helping me to realize I wanted something more than my former career was providing. Starting in the fall I'll be pursing a graduate degree at the La Follette School of Public Affairs, which will allow me to have a positive impact on my home state and its citizens. When not in class or at the studio, I love cooking for friends, growing things, making art, playing outside, and chasing small furry creatures (pets, not wild ones!). |
Introducing New Receptionist Maria Miller
7 years ago, I started with vinyasa yoga on and off at various places. It wasn't until early one Sunday morning, while the rest of Madison probably slept, a friend and I decided to try Hot Yoga at the old studio on University. I remember exactly how I felt later that day-AMAZING.. tons of energy... I was hooked and have had a consistent practice for over 3 years. I've had many friends question whether or not I get my heart rate up enough while doing yoga.. anyone who has ever done it, knows just how crazy your heart can get after doing Balancing Stick Pose :) When I am not doing yoga, I own a graphic/web design business which I have been doing for 12+ years. My weeks are quite varied but the energy I get from mixing it up week to week, keeps me motivated. I also enjoy gardening, cooking, eating, kayaking and my pets! | Abundance Celebration Weekend 2010 May 1stand 2nd - Save the Date

Honoring Earth and Heaven, We Honor Ourselves Back in 1969 when Senator Gaylord Nelson founded Earth Day, he was very concerned about the impact human beings were having on the earth. If he were still alive to witness Earth Day's upcoming 40th anniversary this April 22, there is no doubt he would be pleased with much of the environmental progress that has been made around the world. He would, however, have to concede that we still have a long way to go to restore a balance between our actions and the impact they are having on our planet. It is fair to say that the environmental imbalance we are experiencing in nature comes from the fact that most human beings see themselves as separate and distinct from our Mother Earth. As Yogis, however, we are aware of the interconnectedness and interdependence of our lives-not only with each other, but with the entire world. As the " Peaceful Planet websiteso aptly puts it, "As one humanity sharing one earth, we are profoundly connected to this planet. We are a diverse, global community united in a common purpose to restore a [balanced] relationship with ourselves, with Mother Earth and with the Source of All That Is." Inner Fire Yoga's commitment to environmental consciousness is supported by our GREEN YOGA STUDIO: *100% radiant heat in our yoga studios, which requires lower energy supply than most modern heating systems; *Two ERV's (energy recovery ventilators) that recycle the heat in the yoga studios as well as in the reception area; *Participants in MG&E's Green Power Tomorrow program, by purchasing wind power that offsets our carbon foot print; *Recycled paper for printing; ·Free filtered water and BPE-free water bottles for sale in our boutique. · Non-toxic and organic products sold in our boutique, such as ECO-MATS, soy-based aromatherapy candles, organic yoga clothing, organic whole-food energy bars. · Bio-degradable and non-toxic cleaning and laundering soaps are used to keep our space clean. * A custom-built yoga studio according to the US Green Building Council's LEED's guidelines. What can we do as individuals and members of a green-centered yoga community to "live green" off our mats? Make a commitment now, of complete and total mindfulness, to protect and honor our earth and heavens. Need ideas? Check this websitefor more than 70 lists of how to be green, organized by category. By following Inner Fire Yoga's example of being green - in your own home - is a good start. And, maybe one of the most effective ways to GO GREEN is to walk or bike to the yoga studio. On this upcoming 40th anniversary of Earth Day, we all need to recommit ourselves to aligning with nature. Each act moving us forward to our goal of environmental balance and health is meaningful. As Blaise Pascal said, "The least movement is of importance to all nature. The entire ocean is affected by a pebble." Our interconnectedness, our divine connection to Mother Earth and Father Heaven means that by giving to them, we are giving to ourselves. |
April's Featured Yoga Skill
Vrksasana (Tree Pose)
In honor of Earth Day, this month's featured yoga pose is Vrksasana, the Tree Pose. This pose harnesses the powers of mental concentration, while allowing you to calm the mind. It develops balance and stability, and strengthens the legs and feet, also increasing flexibility in the hips and knees. By practicing tree pose you will feel strongly rooted with energy pouring upwards to help you defy gravity - like a tree!
- Stand straight with your feet together.
- Bring your weight onto your left foot, feeling the ground with your left foot as you prepare to balance.
- Pick up your right foot. Bend your right leg, placing the sole of your right foot on the inside of your left thigh.
- Press your right foot into your left thigh as you stretch upward.
- Raise your arms above your head once you have your balance, shoulder-width apart, with your palms facing together. Keep your shoulders down.
- Practice until you can hold the yoga pose comfortably for about 30 seconds.
- Repeat, this time standing on the right foot and lifting the left.

Yoga Medical News Yoga for muscle strength and bone health in postmenopausal women
It has been shown in numerous research studies that exercise prevents rapid bone loss, increases muscle strength, mobility and flexibility in postmenopausal women. This study evaluated "the effect of yoga exercises in postmenopausal osteoporotic women on balance and life quality and to compare the results with a classic osteoporosis exercise program." "Twenty-six postmenopausal osteoporotic women over 55 years of age were included in the study. A neuromuscular test battery and the QUALEFFO as a life quality index were used for the assessment of balance and life quality, respectively. . . . The results showed that yoga education has a positive effect on pain, physical functions, social functions . . . In conclusion, yoga appears to be an alternative physical activity for the rehabilitation of osteoporotic subjects." Abstract: PubMed PMID: 20332729.
