Jesse Davis

Jesse
Growing up and throughout college I played sports and lifted weights to try and stay in shape. My long time friend from home had tried for years to get me to give hot yoga a shot, but it wasn't until a string of knee injuries forced me to explore other options that I took him up on it. I started going to IFY once or twice a week toward the end of August 2009. Now, just a few months later, I try to make it there 5 times a week! I'm in better shape now that I had ever been before I began practicing yoga. I only wish I had known about this while I was still playing football and basketball, as I'm sure it would have prevented my knees from ever getting so messed up in the first place. A year ago I would have never in a million years imagined I'd be doing this, but now I plan to practice hot yoga for the rest of my life. I am so thankful to IFY and all the instructors, without whom I maybe would have never been able to start on this journey.

The Power Yoga Master Class will be a strong, well rounded, yet simple physical practice that leaves every nook and cranny in our bodies vibrating with vitality while challenging our minds in the sense of strengthening the qualities of mind that are most useful, positive and powerful, while eradicating the qualities of our mind that are harmful and stress inducing. It will strengthen qualities such as calmness, patience, focus, gentleness, gratitude, humility and acceptance, while weakening qualities such as judgment, competitiveness, distraction, reaction, and criticism.

Now 45, Bryan Kest has been practiciing yoga for more than 30 years. He initially studied in Hawaii with David Williams, the first person to bring Ashtanga yoga to America. He then studied in India with K. Pattabhi Jois, the main proponent of Ashtanga yoga. Kest has been teaching yoga for 26 years. "My primary objective," says Kest, "besides turning more and more people on to a healthier, more peaceful lifestyle that continually challenges them to grow, is to teach a system of exercise that fully integrates teh body, mind, and spirit. The new trend towards yoga is not surprising, given that the body is limited and the mind is limitless. The combination of body and mind creates an incredibly broad range of fulfillment, including top physical condition and a calm, peaceful, clear mind.

The Yoga Path
Being Present

When people first start practicing yoga, they are often amazed at how physically challenging it is.  Beginners commonly walk out of their first class completely surprised and exhausted by the endurance and strength that yoga demands.  Just as often, people return to yoga intent on conquering the physical demands, and continue to practice with the goal of perfecting the physical postures through hard work and persistence.

As natural and important as this response to yoga is, it is only the beginning. With time and effort, the yoga practitioner begins to recognize perhaps an even greater challenge: the challenge of "the ego."

What is the ego? According to Eckhardt Tolle, author of The Power of Now and A New Earth, the ego is "...a misperception of who you are, an illusory sense of identity." It is, he says, "the voice in the head", the voice that keeps our minds overly stimulated and in an analytical state where we are desperately searching for something we can't identify. We, therefore, are constantly trying to identify ourselves by the things we own, the things we pursue, and the things in which we surround ourselves. The ego directs us to look outward (towards things) where we find isolation, competitiveness, resentment and anger, and not inward where peace and tranquility can be found.

The good news, Tolle points out, is that we don't have to live ego-driven lives. We don't have to be driven by the noisy "voice in the head," searching to find ourselves in things, or identities, only to "end up losing [ourselves] in them."

How, then, do we avoid being ego-driven? The answer is:  be present.  By being present, we become aware of "the voice in the head" and are able to turn it down or even off.  By doing so, we start becoming conscious of the "illusion of the ego."  Tolle says, "If you can recognize illusion as illusion, it dissolves...In the seeing of who you are not, the reality of who you are emerges by itself."  By discovering who you really are-an extension of the divine-you tap into a wellspring of lasting peace and happiness.

And, that's where yoga comes in. Think of yoga as a jumpstart on the journey of taming the ego. Through our yoga practice, we begin to tame the ego by consciously striving to be present, letting go of thoughts, and quieting the mind.

Each time we practice yoga with the intent of focusing on our breath, we practice being present in the here and now. By consciously following the dialogue of the instructor, and not allowing the mind to wander, we become aware of when it does, and then we learn how to steer it back to the present, to the breath.  Each time we become aware of labeling (or judging) ourselves or others around us, we learn to gently let go of those labels (or judgments.)

It is through being present that we become aware of our incessant, habitual thought patterns and, therefore, we begin to understand our minds.  We begin to understand that we are not "the voice," that we actually do have control over it, and that we do have an option to silence it.  This is how yoga helps us to see through the illusion of the demanding ego and become more familiar with our true selves and the genuine peace and happiness within.

Yes, yoga definitely serves to strengthen and heal us physically, but it also serves us on a deeper, more profound level, helping us to shake loose the chains of the ego and to awaken to a new state of joyous consciousness.
February's Featured Yoga Skill
Ujjayi Pranayama (Victorious Breath)

Ujjayi"Ujjayi is a diaphragmatic breath, which first fills the lower belly, rises to the lower rib cage, and finally moves into the upper chest and throat.

Inhalation and exhalation are both done through the nose. The "ocean sound" is created by moving the glottis as air passes in and out. As the throat passage is narrowed so, too, is the airway, the passage of air through which creates a "rushing" sound. The length and speed of the breath is controlled by the diaphragm, the strengthening of which is, in part, the purpose of Ujjayi. The inhalations and exhalations are equal in duration, and are controlled in a manner that causes no distress to the practitioner.

Ujjayi is a balancing and calming breath, which increases oxygenation and builds internal body heat.

Ujjayi breathing may be used continuously throughout Power Yoga. This breath enables the practitioner to maintain a rhythm to their practice, take in enough oxygen, and helps build energy to maintain practice, while clearing toxins out of the bodily system. This breath is especially important during transition into and out of asanas (postures), as it helps practitioners to stay present, self-aware, and grounded in the practice, which lends it a meditative quality."

Yoga Medical News
Yoga minimizes stress-related inflammation

Medical News
Researchers at Ohio State University have concluded that yoga minimizes stress-related inflammation. The importance of these findings is critical to a range of diseases, since inflammation is a reliable predictor of all-cause mortality in older adults. Their research data demonstrate the "pathway through which yoga or related practices may affect physiological functioning and health." And they conclude by emphasizing that "if yoga dampens or limits stress-related immunological, endocrinological, and cardiovascular changes, then regular practice could have substantial benefits."
