Student Spotlight Tom Junk
What's my yoga story...
On the final day of a health club trial, I dropped into a yoga session just for fun. At the end of class, Darlene (who happened to be a substitute instructor that day) invited me to Hot Yoga Introduction at Inner Fire Yoga. By the end of the Intro on February 21st, I thought I might like this stuff. Then I took the full Hot Yoga class a few days later and recall my thought changing to 'holy crap'. It was hot, it was tiring, and it was amazing to see what all the students could do. Being a little competitive, I came back wanting to do better. Now, after 8 months, I have gained many benefits.
Notably: - more flexibility - as seen in my golf swing - dramatically reduced pain in my lower back - a calmer sense of being - weight loss of 40 lbs (lost weight in the first 4 months and still maintaining that loss)
I can safely say all these benefits are attributed to yoga, as yoga is the active change I made to my life. Thanks, to all the instructors at Inner Fire, each of you do a great job!
In particular, thanks Darlene for the first invite. I don't know why you happened to invite me to the Intro class, but I appreciate it.
Namaste,
Tom Junk P.S. I think my girlfriend/wife Lynn likes me more, too. |

The Yoga Path Giving
December is upon us, and with it our thoughts turn to the season of giving. This leads many to brace themselves in preparation for meeting the demands and stresses of this season. It can feel like gearing up for a long, exhausting battle that must be tackled with super-human strength. Many of us greet this season with the mind-set that it is a mandatory hardship or burden, survivable only through extreme sacrifice, hard work and endurance. However, giving doesn't have to be hard. In fact, it can be exactly the opposite.
Perhaps it sounds cliché, but it is impossible to give anyone anything if one is empty or depleted oneself. It is important to start the giving season by first giving to yourself. Give yourself permission to take care of "number one", make it your top priority. Despite increased time demands - or especially because of increased time demands - make space in your life for down time. Do not give up on your meditation practice during this season. Or if you haven't yet added meditation to your personal wellness practice, then perhaps now is the time to give yourself this gift by beginning to practice meditation on a regular basis. It is energizing to take a few minutes out of the day to calm the mind and body, even if it is as few as 5 minutes. You'll feel more productive, efficient, grounded and clear-minded.
Of course, continue to give yourself the gift of a regular yoga practice. Like meditation, yoga helps calm the mind while strengthening the body and keeping it healthy. Yoga in a heated room aids in the release of toxins and stress through sweating, which, in turn, can strengthen the immune system, thus warding off viruses and colds.
Another gift you can give yourself this season is the gift of positive thinking and speech. So much of the stress we experience during this season is self-imposed. By starting out the season with the attitude that it's all exhaustive busy-ness, we set ourselves up to be miserable. Instead, approach the season with joy, thankfulness, and playfulness. Give yourself permission to do what you can, and enjoy what you can, then let the rest go. Be thankful for the resources in your life, both physical and spiritual. Allow the abundance of the universe to fill your heart. By appreciating all that you have-prosperity, energy and time (however limited you believe these commodities to be)-you will find that the universe can and will provide even more.
The Giving Season can be full, rich and rewarding, as long as we take care of ourselves and tap into our deeper, inner resources. According to Paramahansa Yogananda (author of Autobiography of a Yogi, sold at Inner Fire Yoga) "Understand and experience the superior joys of the interior life, then everyone around you will feel and benefit from the pure joy that emanates silently from within your soul." Give to yourself and you indeed give to others.

SAVE THE DATE! Bryan Kest is coming to Inner Fire Yoga Bryan Kest will be teaching a master class on Wed. March 10, 2010 in the evening.
Now 45, Bryan Kest has been practicing yoga for more than 30 years. He initially studied in Hawaii with David Williams, the first person to bring Ashtanga yoga to America. He then studied in India with K. Pattabhi Jois, the main proponent of Ashtanga yoga. Kest has been teaching yoga for 26 years. "My primary objective", says Kest, "besides turning more and more people on to a healthier, more peaceful lifestyle that continually challenges them to grow, is to teach a system of exercise that fully integrates the body, mind, and spirit. The new trend towards yoga is not surprising, given that the body is limited and the mind is limitless. The combination of body and mind creates an incredibly broad range of fulfillment, including top physical condition and a calm, peaceful, clear mind."
"I noticed a difference in the tightness of my body. Some places got a little tighter... like my tummy and that was just after a few classes." --World Class Figure Skater Tai Babilonia "It will change your way of thinking. It has changed mine. I'm a true endorser of Bryan's work and only because I've experienced his classes first hand." --World Champion Figure Skater Randy Gardner "It's very simple stuff. You don't do anything other than try to lift your arms and legs... That's basically it... And it challenges the most competent athletes." --World Class Basketball Player Kareem Abdul-Jabar Visit Bryan's website

December's Featured Yoga Pose Savasanah (shah-VAHS-anna)
An essential pose for the crazy holiday season, savasanah relaxes the entire body, reduces headache and fatigue, and calms the brain, thus helping to relieve stress.
- Lie down on the back, letting the feet fall to either side. Bring the arms alongside the body and turn the palms to face upwards.
- Relax the whole body, including the face-softening the root of the tongue, the wings of the nose, the channels of the inner ears, and the forehead. Let the eyes sink to the back of the head and then turn them downward to gaze at the heart. Allow yourself to breathe naturally.
- It is ideal to stay in the pose for 5 minutes for every 30 minutes of practice. It is also a wonderful pose to unwind at the end of the day. Adding props (pillows, blankets, eye pillows, etc.) is especially luxurious.
- To come out of the pose, first begin by deepening the break, and then move the fingers and toes, bringing awareness back to your body. Bring the knees into the chest, roll over to one side and slowly bring yourself back into a seated position. Breathe deeply with the eyes closed in a comfortable seated posture for a few moments before opening the eyes.
