New at IFY: Aroma Flow Yoga

Flower

with Darlene Vander Hoop

Fridays 6:30-7:45pm
(note this class is now 75 minutes)

Aroma Flow is a 75-minute yoga class incorporating approximately 60 minutes of flow yoga and 15 minutes of meditation, during which three to four Essential Oils are added at intervals to illuminate energy, quiet the chattering mind and enable relaxation.  Fragrances of seeds, leaves, flower petals, roots, and resins instruct the body's bio-electrical energy to calm the central nervous system, reduce muscular tensions, and facilitate meditation. This is a fun, informative, casual class and perhaps slightly less intense than power flow or hot yoga classes.  In short, the natural combining of scent and yoga is simply Scent-Sational!

Student Spotlight
Ryan Drea

Ryan Drea
I started doing Yoga at Inner Fire because I hurt my back four years ago and after going through a couple cycles of rehabbing and thinking my back was fixed only to hurt it again I knew it was time to try a different approach. I decided to try yoga because I had done a little in college and I remembered how it made me feel more flexible and I thought that would help relieve my back pain. I still remember walking into my first class last winter and wondering if I had made the wrong decision, the heat was staggering and I could feel the sweat beginning to bead on my forehead before I had my mat rolled out.  I stuck it out and walked out of class feeling tremendous, my back felt better than it had in months and I was elated.   I was already hooked almost immediately and was in class the very next day.

I tried to fit Yoga into my schedule for the next few months, then last summer I was able to start coming on a regular basis. I was amazed at all the benefits to a regular yoga practice, my back was feeling great, I was losing weight and my stress level was dropping.  I liked it so much that during a week and half off from work I decided use Inner Fire Yoga Center as my own personal yoga retreat.  I took at least one class a day and after doing it for seven days straight I was amazed at both the physical and mental improvement that were beginning to happen.  It is hard to describe, but one day in class I felt like a fog had lifted from my mind.  Ever since that day I have felt more at ease, more focused and better balanced in all aspects of my life.  It was on that day that I realized yoga was not something I would be doing for the next few months but for the rest of my life. Yoga has changed me inside and out and I look forward to continuing to discover the benefits of my practice.
Teacher Spotlight
Dr. Ruddy, ND

RuddyDr. Ruddy, ND is a Bikram Yoga teacher who is also a practicing Naturopathic Doctor. He began his yoga practice years ago following his recovery from a debilitating physical injury (vertebral compression fracture) sustained during an auto-vehicle accident.  His dedicated Bikram yoga practice eventually led him to complete his teacher training certification at the Bikram Yoga College of India (Los Angeles, CA) in the summer of 2004. Teaching and practicing Bikram Yoga soon became the cornerstone of his subsequent pursuit & journey into the world of natural medicine, culminating in the completion of his 4-year medical education at Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine along with 2 years of clinical rotations at the Southwest Naturopathic Medical Center in Arizona. Dr. Ruddy finds the regular practice of Bikram or Hot Yoga to be one of the most effective healing modalities in many of his students' and patients' lives. He recently opened his private practice in the west side of Madison, WI. He teaches Hot Yoga at 5:45pm Sunday evenings at Inner Fire Yoga. (For more info, please visit www.DrRuddy.com)

Receptionist Spotlight
Doug McIntosh

Doug McIntosh
Meeting new people and practicing yoga are two of my favorite things, so I'm grateful and excited to be joining the Inner Fire team as a receptionist. After graduating from the UW in 2002 with a degree in psychology, I joined the Peace Corps and served for two years as an HIV/AIDS educator in Mali, West Africa. When I returned I began working at Epic, where I stayed until just recently. In addition to yoga, I am passionate about photography, Photoshop, travel, speaking French and watching reality TV with my Rhodesian Ridgeback, Parker.
The Yoga Path
Service

"Nothing liberates our greatness like the desire to help, the desire to serve," says author Marianne Williamson.   Serving is a tool that benefits both the server and the served.  At Inner Fire Yoga, we believe that a committed yoga practice is a powerful way in itself to serve.

It's obvious how yoga practitioners serve themselves with a disciplined yoga practice - by gaining physical strength, flexibility and balance, staying physically fit and feeling great.  Many yoga practitioners, however, are surprised when they discover not just the physical fitness benefits of yoga, but the psychological and spiritual benefits that inevitably arise.

Yoga helps to de-stress and to quiet overtly-active minds.  Well known yoga teacher and author Donna Farhi says, "Yoga practice makes available to us a new and altogether different view of reality." Ms. Farhi goes on to say that through finding inner stillness, we "unleash the energy that we have been using to maintain the boundaries of the mind" and therefore "...bring about the unbinding of consciousness, the opening of awareness." This new awareness opens our minds and hearts, and brings about a positive energetic expansion in ourselves that we then begin to extend to others.

When our awareness becomes more open and we are not obsessed with the noisy interior world of our self-centered minds, we can easily connect, both authentically and compassionately, with others.  Our energy grows - the energy to focus with compassion on the well being of the people that surround us.  Our inclination to serve with compassion and awareness becomes more of a natural impulse, which brings along with it a sense of fulfillment and joy.

It is with this understanding of how yoga not only helps us individually, but also moves us into an expanded state of compassion towards others that we can begin to view our yoga practice as an important service.  By practicing yoga regularly, we contribute not only to our own health and well being, but to the well being of those around us, to the wellbeing of our entire community.  As Paramahansa Yogananda, founder of the Self Realization Fellowship and author of Autobiography of a Yogi, has stated, "Your soul is a beacon of power. You can expand that power from within and give light, health and understanding to others."

SAVE THE DATE! Bryan Kest is coming to Inner Fire Yoga
Bryan Kest will be teaching a master class on Wed. March 10, 2010 in the evening.

Bryan Kest
Now 45, Bryan Kest has been practicing yoga for more than 30 years. He initially studied in Hawaii with David Williams, the first person to bring Ashtanga yoga to America. He then studied in India with K. Pattabhi Jois, the main proponent of Ashtanga yoga. Kest has been teaching yoga for 26 years. "My primary objective", says Kest, "besides turning more and more people on to a healthier, more peaceful lifestyle that continually challenges them to grow, is to teach a system of exercise that fully integrates the body, mind, and spirit.

The new trend towards yoga is not surprising, given that the body is limited and the mind is limitless. The combination of body and mind creates an incredibly broad range of fulfillment, including top physical condition and a calm, peaceful, clear mind."

"I noticed a difference in the tightness of my body. Some places got a little tighter... like my tummy and that was just after a few classes."
--World Class Figure Skater Tai Babilonia

"It will change your way of thinking. It has changed mine. I'm a true endorser of Bryan's work and only because I've experienced his classes first hand."
--World Champion Figure Skater Randy Gardner

"It's very simple stuff. You don't do anything other than try to lift your arms and legs... That's basically it... And it challenges the most competent athletes."
--World Class Basketball Player Kareem Abdul-Jabar

November's Featured Yoga Pose
Camel: Ustrasana

CamelUstrasana or Camel Pose stretches the entire front of the body, the ankles, thighs and groins, abdomen and chest, and the throat.  It improves posture, strengthening the back muscles and stretching the deep hip flexors.  It also stimulates the organs of the abdomen and neck.

  1. Kneel on the floor with the knees hip width apart and the thighs perpendicular to the floor.  Rotate the thighs internally and slightly firm the buttocks.  Imagine drawing the sit bones up into the torso, keeping the outer hips soft.  Press the shins and the tops of the feet into the floor.
  2. Rest hands on the back of the pelvis, bases of the palms on the tops of the buttocks, fingers pointing down.  Use the hands to spread the back pelvis and lengthen it down through the tail bone, then lightly firm the tail forward, toward the pubis.  To prevent the front groins from moving forward, press the front thighs back, countering the forward action of the tail.  Inhale and lift the heart by pressing the shoulder blades against the back ribs.
  3. Lean back against the firmness of the tail bone and shoulder blades.  Start by keeping the head up, chin near the sternum, and the hands on the pelvis.  Drop straight back into the pose, touching both the hands to the feet simultaneously while keeping the thighs perpendicular to the floor, or, if necessary, tilt the thighs back a little from the perpendicular and minimally twist to one side to get one hand on the same-side foot.  Then press the thighs back to perpendicular, turn the torso back to neutral, and touch the second hand to its foot.  If unable to touch the feet without compressing the low back, turn the toes under and elevate the heels.
  4. Release the front ribs and lift the front of the pelvis up toward the ribs, then lift the lower back ribs away from the pelvis to keep the lower spine as long as possible.  Press palms firmly against the soles of the feet (or the heels) with the bases of the palms on the heels and the fingers pointing towards the toes.  Turn the arms outwardly so the elbow creases face forward, without squeezing the shoulder blades together.  Keep the neck in a relatively neutral position, neither fixed nor extended, or drop the head back.  Be careful not to strain the neck and harden the throat.
  5. Stay in the pose anywhere from 30 seconds to a minute.  To exit, bring the hands to the front of the pelvis at the hip points.  Inhale and lift the head and torso up by pushing the hip points down, toward the floor.  If the head is back, lead with the heart to come up.  Rest in Child's Pose for a few breaths.
Safety Mindfulness

A hot yoga studio can be a slippery place - with the sweat puddles on the cork floor and water on the floors near the showers.  So please tread VERY carefully when walking through the studio at all times.  If you are making puddles around your mat during yoga class, please double up on your towels/Yogitoes and bring a special rag capable of wiping up ALL of your sweat from the floor around you at the end of class.  Please try to dry off quickly in the shower before exiting in order to minimize the puddling of water on the floors.

Take all necessary precautions to prevent the spread of flu this fall and winter season.  This includes not coming to the studio if you are ill - including coughing excessively and or experiencing aches/pains/fever.  Please keep your hands clean and wash them immediately after class.  Use your own yoga mat, and wash frequently with an antimicrobial wash (such as tea tree oil or grape seed oil). Check the CDC's website for further recommendations on prevention techniques (link is
http://www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/preventing.htm).

Thank you for your mindfulness in these manners.

Lost and Found

If you have left behind any jewelry, clothing water bottles, mats, etc., check our lost and found. It is Inner Fire Yoga's policy to keep most items for two weeks before recycling them. Be sure to ask for assistance before entering the teacher's lounge where the items are stored. Thank you.
