Student Spotlight Arminda Pineda
Starting a regular yoga practice this summer has been one of my best experiences. I do yoga every day and sometimes twice a day. I have had incredible changes that I was not expecting when I started yoga; I have lost 10 pounds in three weeks and I feel a lot more relaxed and more flexible. You too can do yoga and you are going to be surprised at the many positive changes you will experience in your life. |
The Yoga Path Self Discipline
The practice of yoga extends far beyond practicing the physical postures known as asanas. It includes a deep, rich philosophy that embraces an entire way of viewing and responding to the world and life. One part of yoga philosophy is a categorization of five major negative behaviors that practitioners are encouraged to avoid, these are known as the "yamas". There are also five categories of positive behaviors known as the "niyamas". These are: 1) keeping the body and mind pure, 2) self-discipline, 3) training the senses, 4) studying the Divine, and 5) surrendering to the Divine. Here, we examine the niyama of "self-discipline". Often, when people think of self-discipline, they think of a struggle or a fight against something they desire. In this sense, self-discipline takes on a negative connotation, one of self-deprivation and self-sacrifice. For example, "I can't eat that cake," or "I can't sleep in," or "I can't go to yoga because I have to _____________ (fill in the blank)". However, it is possible to flip this view and see that, in actuality, self-discipline is not self-deprivation. Actually, it is a means by which people can have and attain exactly what they want. For example, "By eating the right kinds of foods, I can have the health and beauty I desire;" or "By getting up early, I can accomplish my goals for the day;" or "by practicing yoga, I can achieve my goal of ____________ (fill in the blank)." So in reality self-discipline is the way to attain goals and desires. By choosing self-discipline, it is possible to not only move towards a certain goal but also to reinforce a sense of self that helps to achieve other goals as well. It should come as no surprise that practicing yoga on a regular basis is a practice of self-discipline. Just getting to class-especially on time-often takes great discipline. By practicing asana, focusing on the breath and cultivating awareness of internal mental dialogue, it is possible to tune-in to the body/mind and the importance of keeping it healthy and strong. By slowing down the chatter in the mind, one can tap into a deeper self, and let go of unhealthy thoughts and belief systems that hinder emotional and/or spiritual growth. Self-discipline strengthens every time a yoga student practices staying on his/her yoga mat for the entire class, all the while remaining calm and being still in the pose (and even in-between yoga poses). It entails moving harmoniously and smoothly in the flow, whether it is the flow of the breath, the vinyasa, the instructions, or the energy in room...all the while giving 100% best effort to every class. When you find yourself holding a difficult pose, shaking and shuddering, with every muscle crying out, and your mind yelling at you to "please bring an end to this mental and physical pain right now!", this is the time to take note of the breath, to feel the experience fully, and to let go of the false mind. This practice is the essence of the niyama of "self discipline". It is through the practice of self discipline that self-realization occurs, with the added benefits of physical health and mental peace. |

September's Featured Yoga Pose
Warrior One (Sasangasana)
Warrior One is a great first step toward improved balance, coordination and leg strength. This pose grounds you to the earth as you reach for the sky!
Step 1
Beginning in downward facing dog pose, bring your right foot forward, carefully placing it on the inside of your right hand.
Step 2
Turn your back foot on a diagonal and move it enough forward so your hips are aligned pointing forward. Place your hands on your hips and bend your front knee until the knee is directly above the foot. Rotate your pelvis under your body so that your tailbone is pointing down toward the ground.
Step 3
Reach both arms to the sky, keeping a slight bend in the elbow, palms facing inward and fingers outstretched. Focus your energy down out of your feet and up out of your hands. Breathe deeply and hold the pose for 5 to 10 breaths Repeat steps 1-3 on the other side |
Upcoming Yoga Workshop and Teacher Training Jonny Kest
Stay tuned for dates (either December 2009 or January 2010).
"I have spent years sampling different Yoga styles and attending various workshops, conventions and Teacher Training's, searching for the right one. I don't have to look any further, this (Jonny Kest training) is it. It was here I learned the true essence of Yoga. It is not the perfect pose but to be able to take Yoga off my mat and into my daily life. As I now begin to see myself remaining steady amidst the turbulence of life, equanimity is no longer just a word I didn't understand. It is hear I learned to "Live my Yoga." "When the student is ready, the teacher appears."
Kim Hubbarth, Previous workshop attendee This 20 hour Weekend Teacher Training is open to all levels, yoga teachers and students alike. |
Safety Mindfulness
A hot yoga studio can be a slippery place - with the sweat puddles on the cork floor and water on the floors near the showers. So please tread VERY carefully when walking through the studio at all times. If you are making puddles around your mat during yoga class, please double up on your towels/Yogitoes and bring a special rag capable of wiping up ALL of your sweat from the floor around you at the end of class. Please try to dry off quickly in the shower before exiting in order to minimize the puddling of water on the floors. Take all necessary precautions to prevent the spread of flu this fall and winter season. This includes not coming to the studio if you are ill - including coughing excessively and or experiencing aches/pains/fever. Please keep your hands clean and wash them immediately after class. Use your own yoga mat, and wash frequently with an antimicrobial wash (such as tea tree oil or grape seed oil). Check the CDC's website for further recommendations on prevention techniques (link is http://www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/preventing.htm). Thank you for your mindfulness in these manners. |
Lost and Found
If you have left behind any clothing or other lost and found items (water bottles, mats, etc.), please come get them. Be sure to ask for assistance before entering the teacher's lounge where the items are stored. Thank you.
