"The obstacles in our path are the path. Every time we stretch beyond our resistance and our fear, we make a choice for life. And every time we choose life, fear loses its grip on us. We all know more than we think we do, and we are stronger than we believe ourselves to be. We come to our mats, and to our lives, to learn by going where we have to go."
~ Rolf Gates, yoga teacher and author of "Meditations form the Mat"

Massage Therapist Rich Schumann pictured above.
IFY Center Manager, Michael Hoefferle, shares his thoughts about the Vitality Massage, "Six years ago I
had arthroscopic knee surgery for a torn meniscus. I also have scoliosis. Yoga, over the years, has significantly helped with both the recovery from surgery and kept the scoliosis from worsening. For the
past several months, I've been receiving regular massage work from Rich. What a difference this has made! His expert knowledge and technical skill in massage has brought me to a place of greater body
awareness and health, plus his cheerful and relaxed demeanor is a welcomed bonus! The combination of doing yoga and getting massage is priceless. Having a massage by Rich after a hard yoga class results in a full day where I am pain free, focused, relaxed and full of life! He is a real gift to the Inner Fire Yoga
community."

Namaste Yogis and Yoginis,
I can hardly believe that 90 yoga students signed up for our winter personal revolution! Wow. It is so much fun to read the "resolutions", and we are inspired to see the hard work and dedication by the students in the studio. Keep up the transforming work! It's quite obvious how busy we are at Inner Fire Yoga this winter. It is exciting at IFY when it is bustling! We clearly have some space challenges, including at the coat and shoe rack, etc. Thank you for being patient. We are brainstorming ideas on how to improve our space. (Are you a foot traffic architect/designer, and willing/able to help us? Let me know!) If you'd like to claim your space in the yoga room, it is not a bad idea to come early during this busy time - meaning at least 15 minutes before class start time. With two classes going on concurrently, we are limited in the number of bodies we can fit in each room. If a yoga room reaches capacity, late comers will be sadly requested to wait to attend the next class. (Online pre-registration will not guarantee a space in class, it is "first body come - first body served".) I am very excited about the upcoming visit of the amazing yogi Rolf Gates! Now is the time to register for his classes. You have the option of attending one, two, three or all four of his classes the weekend of Feb. 27 - March 1. If you are a dedicated and passionate yoga student, you can attend the Sunday morning teacher training (you do not need to be a yoga teacher to attend). If you plan to attend one of Rolf's workshops at IFY, then I recommend strongly that you read his book Meditations from the Mat, sold in our retail boutique. It's a wonderful read! Also upcoming, is Alex's Partner Yoga and Thai massage workshop on Valentine's Day, what a lovely way to spend the day! As always, my gratitude for the students and staff runs deep...
Keep Yoga-ing (stay warm)! Marit Sathrum Owner/Director Inner Fire Yoga Center for Wellness

"What a difference a year makes. The workshops, challenges and my personal practice has taken me to a deeper flexibility. At 61 it has lowered my blood pressure. I breathe deeper. I am able to relax on the outside and on the inside. My spiritual path has become clearer with many additions falling away. I am focused on the present moment with satisfying visions of the future." ~ Tom Jeffson Staff note: Tom has practiced over 415 classes at IFY since July 2007! Way to go Tom! |

Angie Carlson
I first came to Inner Fire Yoga Center as a student, and still consider myself to be a student as much as a teacher. I enjoy the challenge of trying new poses or approaching familiar poses in a new way. This mindset probably most defines my teaching, which is an evolutionary style that allows for creativity and
growth, challenging students to stretch their minds and bodies in new ways. I never teach the same class twice, though I also recognize the value of a more structured practice.
I love to see students modifying or embellishing poses. Ultimately, I want them to realize that yoga is a
different journey for everybody, and that it is in the journey that we find the gifts that yoga has to offer:
a healthier, stronger mind and body; an increased connection to ourselves, others and the universe; and
the ability to live our lives in a calmer, more compassionate, more aware manner.
I need to remind myself of these things even more often than I do my students. I remind myself to let go of attachment to how close my forehead is to my toes in paschimottanasana, how high and straight my leg is in bird of paradise, or how many chattarungas I can sweat through. I remind myself to focus on how a pose feels, rather than how it looks. Living my yoga is an ongoing process.
This is becoming especially relevant now that I'm pregnant. As my body changes, I need to remind myself to show compassion to myself and respect the fact that my body will not always look and feel how I expect it to. Fortunately I have been able to keep up a strong practice (at least so far, I still have four months to go!). I've had to make a little extra room in some poses, and give others up altogether, but another great thing about yoga is that there are over eight hundred poses (so they say) to choose from, so I can always find another option. And, some poses have become even more accessible to me.
Another realm in which I need to remind myself to "live my yoga" is in my day job as an English teacher at West High School. I am fortunate to be able to work at West part time and to teach yoga part time. Yoga has taught me to listen to and be present for my students, and to try to stay calm, non-judgmental, and compassionate in difficult situations. I usually do my own yoga practice in the morning, so I go to school in the afternoon feeling centered, calm, and energized.
I plan to continue practicing, teaching, and learning about yoga for as long as I can, and I hope to stay a part of the vibrant Inner Fire community; the connections I have made there have enriched my life. I invite you to join me in class. Namaste. Angie |

More Info on the Sunday Morning Teacher Training Teacher Training: The Art of Theming In every class there is an opportnity created by the students, the teacher and the practice. The theme that emerges from a class articulates this opportunity and allows for the essence of the practice to be taken off the mat and into our lives. Theming is the means by which the Yoga teacher brings yoga theory into the daily lives of the students. This training will be an introduction to the methodogy Rolf has developed for synergizing the physical and the metaphysical. This workshop is open to teachers and passionate students of yoga alike. It is recommended that if you plan to attend the teacher training, also attend at least one of the other weekend sessions as well.
