IFY donated over $2,000 in August to three charities:

$632 donated to Heifer International on 08/20/2008.  These proceeds came from the summer POWER FLOW YOGA FOR TEENS class - the teens chose to donate the proceeds of their special class to Heifer International.  In an effort to spread the goodwill worldwide, three projects were the recipients including the Sustainable Community Development Project in Nepal, the Promotion of Food Sovereignty Project in Honduras, and the Eastern Uganda Umbrella Project.

$688.50 donated to Dresses that Heal, "combining fashion with compassion" by raising funds and awareness to fight breast cancer, on 08/20/2008.  The proceeds were from the INTRO TO YOGA donation-based classes (Jan.-June 2008) and from Inner Fire Yoga's April Abundance Celebration.

$688.50 donated to The Rainbow Project, helping young children and families in stress in Madison, on 08/20/2008.  The proceeds were from the INTRO TO YOGA donation-based classes (Jan.-June 2008) and proceeds from Inner Fire Yoga's April Abundance Celebration.

Issue # 13 September 2008
Greetings!

I, for one, am so happy that it is autumn.  I love the smell, shadows, colors, birds flying in formation, leaves on the lawn, wearing jeans again, etc.
I am also happy to be back into the "school season schedule".  Don't get me wrong, I LOVE summer, but somehow it IS nice to be back on a regular schedule.  That may be why I love the discipline of a yoga practice so much.

I am so proud of all of the Summer Vitality Challengers (including myself, finally - after 4 tries)!  Way to go!  Get ready for the next yoga challenge... starts Oct 4th and goes until Dec. 5th, 13 weeks, 5 yoga classes per week.  Can you do it?  YES YOU CAN! (Parents, is that a familiar phrase?)  At least try... You won't regret it.  Sign up now on the sticker-matrix on the Wall of Fame at the studio.  And, check the new testimonials on our website for inspiration by some of the Summer Vitality Challenge achievers.

Our fall/winter schedule will start on Monday Oct 13th.  You can see a preview by linking from the website news & events page, and there will be a flyer available at the front desk.  Good news:  we are adding 12 classes per week!  As my 3 year old likes to say:  "Wonderful!"  Please note, there are some changes of instructors and class times, as well as deletions of classes from the current schedule.

Added to our schedule will be two meditation classes per week that will "tag" onto YIN classes.  YIN students can just stay and attend the 30 minute guided meditation class that immediately follows (icing on the cake); or students can pay $8 to drop-in to the class.  Of course, for those of you on unlimited packages, these classes are included in the unlimited plans.

Also new on our schedule is the designation of two INTERMEDIATE Power Flow yoga classes, both at 10:30am on Saturday and Sunday.  To attend these classes, students MUST have an established Power Flow Yoga practice, no exceptions.  Also new will be BEGINNING Power Flow Yoga classes on Saturday and Sunday mornings for one hour beginning at 9am.

One final note, we have changed the name of Inner Fire Fusion to Inner Fire Flow, which is being offered at several more time slots on the new schedule.  I hope you will find the opportunity to attend some of the Inner Fire Flow classes as it offers the best of both Bikram Yoga and Power Flow Yoga.  This class is a set series, which means that it will be the same sequence of poses at every Inner Fire Flow class.  It is not only a challenging class but a lot of fun!

Coming next month:  Dinner and a Movie" at Inner Fire Yoga, in conjuntion with an "open house" - free yoga all day on Sat. Oct 25th.  After all day free yoga, we will host a a potluck dinner followed by a yoga-movie - just to get all of our yogis and yoginis together to hang out and socialize.  Also new and beginning in October - Book Club with Alex (The Power of Now by Eckard Tolle).  We will be sure to let you know more about these events as soon as we can.

Student Spotlight
Yogini and new mother Emily English

Emily English
I practiced yoga regularly throughout my pregnancy and was truly amazed at the changes my body and my practice went through over the course of nine months.  Initially, yoga helped to alleviate the incredible fatigue that I experienced in the first trimester.  There were days that I literally dragged myself into the studio, but I always felt better after a good sweat in a flow or Bikram class.  In the second trimester, I felt great and had the best practice that I have had in years.  My body felt more alive than ever before, and I was much more aware of my body than I had ever been.  The movement of the practice usually put the baby to sleep, and then he would wake up and move and kick vigorously as soon as I laid down to rest.  By the third trimester, I had to give up my flow practice temporarily because I was just too big!  However, I continued to practice Bikram 1-2 times per week until I was 38 weeks pregnant.  I learned a lot during those last three months about meeting my body where it was on any given day. Some days, I felt energetic and strong; while other days, I needed to nurture myself and concentrate on breathing and relaxation more than pushing my edge.

The discipline and training of yoga helped me cope with the intense labor that I went through.  I naively thought that my body would just open up and the baby would basically fall right out... Oh, how I was mistaken.  After about 18 hours of labor, I pushed for 90 minutes, and it was the hardest work that I have ever done in my entire life!  But, because I had learned to breathe through discomfort, engage specific muscles as I needed to and then rest completely in my yoga practice, I was able to work very hard and effectively during contractions and then relax and re-gather my strength to do it again on the next push.  My beautiful son Owen finally joined us at 1:30 am on June 7, 2008!

Even though I thought I would be over the moon after meeting my baby, I experienced the typical mood swings (the "baby blues") that come with dramatically fluctuating hormones after delivery.  I cried every day for the first two weeks I was home from the hospital, and finally I decided that I had to get back to my yoga practice.  I took my first Bikram class the third week after Owen was born, and it helped me to work through the emotional roller coaster of being a new mother.  I have since added flow yoga back into my practice, and I have fallen in love with my son and with motherhood.  My yoga practice now re-invigorates me and helps me to cope with the sleep deprivation and exhaustion of caring for a young baby.  My body is not the same, and in some ways, I am a new student all over again.  I am again learning to compassionately find my edge and lovingly work toward opening and understanding.

Editor's note:  Emily has been with us almost since the beginning - for many years, not just as a yoga student, but for a couple of years she worked as a receptionist at IFY.  Emily is moving to Baltimore, MD this week.  We will miss you so much Em!  Good luck finding a wonderful new yoga-home, and in all things that you do.  Namaste to you from the IFY Community

Wellness Fair &
 Breast Cancer Recovery Benefit
for BCRF and Dresses that Heal
Sat. September 27 from 6 pm - 9 pm
hosted at Inner Fire Yoga Center for Wellness

Editor's note:  Rachael Rivard, founder of Dresses that Heal and Gail Baker, author of Cancer is a Bitch, are members of Inner Fire Yoga's yoga-student community.  Please come out and support them for a great cause!

Breast Cancer is a diagnosis that changes lives in seconds, and the road to recovery often requires strength, hope, knowledge and patience.  These traits do not come in pill form, but methods for achieving them will be presented during the Wellness Fair.  The first wellness fair is an event created by Dresses That Heal to support methods for guests to learn all aspects of wellness including nutrition, mind/body awareness, relaxation and healing through humor.  All proceeds benefit Breast Cancer Recovery, and breast cancer survivors are especially encouraged to attend.

"The idea is to bring together experts in yoga, nutrition and other wellness areas and combine them with entertainment for a great cause - Breast Cancer Recovery," said Rachael Rivard, founder of Dresses That Heal. "Anyone is welcome to come, enjoy a free massage, food and refreshments and learn about yoga, reiki or whatever they are interested in!"
Dresses That Heal
Dresses That Heal is a Madison non-profit that assists brides in making a difference by purchasing a wedding dress in support of breast cancer survivors.  As part of their mission to provide breast cancer awareness, Dresses That Heal recruited professionals to provide free massage, reiki, aromatherapy and nutrition information at the wellness fair.  Gail Konop Baker, a local Madison author and former columnist for Literary Mama, will share excerpts from her new book "Cancer is a Bitch (Or, I'd Rather Be Having a Midlife Crisis)," published by Da Capo Press, October 2008.  Cancer is a BitchGail provides a raw, intimate and brutally honest view of her diagnosis and healing journey enriched by family, friends, running, yoga, nutrition and humor. Gail will sign copies of her book at the event and introduce a Tiffany pendant engraved with "Cancer is a Bitch," proceeds of which will benefit Dresses That Heal.

Members of Breast Cancer Recovery will also be present to provide information about their programs for breast cancer survivors, including Infinite Boundaries wellness retreats.  Breast Cancer Recovery hosts four-day Infinite Boundaries retreats for breast cancer survivors. Designed by breast cancer survivors for breast cancer survivors, each retreat discussions on sensitive topics, creative arts and outdoor recreation.  Sue Abitz, Executive Director of Breast Cancer Recovery, said the retreats help women find peace and learn to re-connect to their bodies after cancer treatments.  "On retreats women try new physical activity, talk to other women who have been there, laugh, and
learn that while they may not be cured, they can still be healed."

Event Tickets may be purchased in advance for $5 dollars at Inner Fire Yoga - all proceeds benefit Breast Cancer Recovery.  For more information or tickets by mail contact Rachael Rivard 608-513-4113.
