Fowl Play: Peeper Problems

For a while there--a good two or three months--the peepers were running the circus in the backyard, flapping and streaking across the lawn from one side of the yard to the other, mowing the grass, dipping in the kiddie pool and lazing in fruit trees' shade. By the looks of things, everything seemed hunky dory, especially for the fowl, but the day-to-day reality was much different. The peepers, all of them-geese, ducks and chickens-were becoming a problem...(read more).

The Aquarium Age: Sept. 5-11

Nervous systems quiver from intensity this week, as several celestial patterns up the ante on the already hectic pace of terrestrial life. Even if you're not involved in any time-specific deadlines or plans and projects in need of staying on schedule, you're likely to feel time simply slipping away.

And that could lead to a peculiar stress reminiscent of a recurring dream many of us have where no matter how hard we try, we just can't seem to make the plane, train, or school bus. But that's not all. The fascia of human interactions, already stretched from the strain of significant emotional demands, is sure to ache from an increased need to make sense of personal circumstances, as well as our collective situation...(read more).

50 MPG by 2025

Last month, President Obama signed off on historic fuel efficiency standards-finalizing a program that would raise the average fuel efficiencies of new passenger vehicles to 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025. The standards set an average--not every new car will have to meet the 54.5 mark, but overall the hope is to raise the MPG of vehicles overall by nearly half what's current. More importantly, perhaps, is one of the consequential benefits of these new standards--job creation. Across the nation, work to achieve the new standards is expected to create 570,000 new jobs--4,500 in Utah alone.
